Rolling Stone Poll: Ten Worst 90s Bands

Soundgarden was my favorite grunge band. I always thought they were more polished as a band and as musicians. Cornell blows the doors off Cobain.

Nirvana had some good songs but I think they peaked. I don't think they would have made any better music or stayed relevant if Cobain lived.

I loved soundgarden, those were my two bands back in the day. Soundgarden and Nirvana.  I'm not sure which I would say is better as they both have really good qualities that made them enjoyable to listen to.  I don't know if Nirvana had peaked or not though, while Cobain was limited as a singer the group overall was very talented and creative with it's song lyrics and approach to music. The studio also did a nice job of marketing them as well.

I love Nirvana but I can see why some don't. I like a lot of Soundgarden's music, but not all of it... some if it really sucks, esp their earlier stuff.

I like some of Pearl Jam's stuff, but they're not my favorite either.

I have yet to come across an AiC song I don't like and pretty much the same with STP.

Aside from Smashing Pumpkins and maybe Screaming Trees or Bush... were there any other big Grunge bands?

Music appreciation is so subjective that discussing this kind of "list" is really almost moot.... with the possible exception of nearly everyone thinking Nickelback sucks.

None really reached Nirvana and Sound garden status mainstream wise aside from the ones you listed.

However the Gits were a good band that ended in tragedy, L7, The Melvins and Mudhoney were good.

Temple of the Dog was a super group tribute to Wood from Mother Love Bone. Green River was a very early mid 80's band that basically kick started the grunge scene in Seattle.

All of the above mentioned are definitely worth a listen if your still into the early 90's sound.

I'd recommend Green river, Mother Love Bone and Temple above the others. All good though.

One thing you'll consistently see from the Seattle Grunge scene is bands ending prematurely due to early deaths from lead singers or song writers.

I personally liked Nirvana, but can see how some would not like them or think they were only ok at best. It's all about personal taste when it comes to music.

However, where this article is crazy at is putting them in a worst of the 90's listing when....

Like it, Hate it or loathe it. Nirvana was the most influential rock band of the 90's, they along with the rest of the Seattle early grunge scene changed the mainstream music business forever and has had a lasting impact on it. They also had talent as well.

Yeah Nirvana was the face of an entire movement similar to the "lad rock" movement a the same time in the UK led by Oasis.

I would also add Kyuss to the Grunge list. Although i don't think you label them completely grunge, not really sure, I guess more like Stoner Rock. But they are a great band.  And like carpanfan said the Melvins are really fuging awesome. Cobaine actually worked for them before Nirvana.

Here's a Kyuss song.

Growing up this is pretty much all I listened too and having a few friends that were from the Seattle area and I was pretty much hooked on grunge during a large part of the 90's.

Sucks that most of those video's didn't work though, oh well.

My top three would have to have been Nirvana, Soundgarden and The Melvins.

I believe The Melvins are still together as well, not 100% sure about that as I don't really keep up with the music industry anymore outside of a few bands that I'm friends with.

They are still together apparently... hmmm...  Might have to pick up some of the newer stuff from them. I really liked them back in the day, just didn't expect them to still be together 20+ years later.

New school Melvins here,

I never really got the hate for Creed/Nickelback. I don't think they're good but I honestly don't think they're bad either. They're both just really bland. Besides a select few acts I've never really been a big fan of 90s music though.

I'll probably get hated on this but I think Pearl Jam should be on the list. I've never seen what the big deal about them was,

    • I mean I think its a bit disingenuous to call basically anyone here a casual fan. I don't think the casual fan creates a profile then logs into it, in the offseason, to comments on mundane offseason topics.. I dont think anyone on here would be considered a casual fan. That said, I get your point. My POV is from the player. They sign this contract, move their family because of these contracts. When Clowney came him, we basically had a coming home party for him.  So yeah, I get why we did it and I know that ultimately the owner doesnt 'save' money, but I can feel for the human side of the player, which is why I want them to get all they can while they can.
    • My guess is the NBA will either send Flagg back “home” to the Northeast in Brooklyn or Washington, or San Antonio so that they can keep building around Wemby. If I was a betting man I would take the odds on the Spurs. This definitely feels like a #1 pick that they will rig.
    • In fairness, she is ensuring she is talked about.  People really aren’t going out there way to bring her up.  It’s some weird poo.  She would end up getting talked about given her actions if she was 40. Bill realizing some of these high end “companions” got a game of their own.  That’s what I don’t think Bill saw coming.
