Smitty OTA Observation 6/5/13

Smitty was on the Radio (Wfnz- the Drive- 3-7pm) and gave some of his observation of this week Ota practices. Here are some highlights.

1. Robert Lester is starting to make some plays at safety.

2. Josh Thomas is still quietly making plays.

3. Gaydosh (The DT from Canada ) is earning the name Shane Burton Jr. Doesn't look athletic but keeps making plays.

4. Byron Bell and Amini are looking good and making strides. You can see a difference in them.

5. Star and KK are looking good.

6. Brandon Williams has a nickname "Big Muscles 86" says he made a catch before he hurt his knee last week and you can here the ball go (goop) when it hit his hands. Says he has a powerful grip.

7. Kuchely made a play on a reverse to 89# and Smitty was like whooa!! At how he showed up out of nowhere.

8. Gettlemen is at every practice taking mental notes.

And the biggest info I got.

9. Smitty Comments on Shula

Likes the better verbiage in the offense. " A slant is a slant why make a speech out of it"

Likes the Fact " That Shula isn't auditioning for a HC job" "He is looking at developing more then Chud did" "if a play isn't ran right Shula will run it again 3-4 more times"

Smitty says "he is shocked that most of the 1st plays they Run are Running plays" Which he thinks will help the offense.

Smitty also said "it looks like Shula has learned from his mistakes as well as the mistakes of the  Former OC" which is another shot at Chud.

After this I have doubt what happen to the offense last season. CHUD!!

From Ron's Comments "of better communication"

To Smitty to no Player crying or tweeting when he took the Brown's job.

He also complimented Mike Mitchell on a diving pick he made.

I've notice that we're not really going to get much from Smitty when it comes to how the other WR's are doing. He's real cautious and calculated whenever he's asked about the other WR's. He use to be the same way about the DB's, but he's loosened up a bit when it comes to dishing out compliments about them.

I like what i hear from smitty... however, I dont know if i like the direct verbiage and the run-heavy 1st down simulation. I know its only OTAs but i think DC's could have a field day if we call the same plays at the same situation [a la foxball]. although we have better athletes and a better QB then we did back then, so who knows.

Just remember, they're cutting down the verbiage in the huddle so they have more time at the line of scrimmage to read the defense and audible. When Cam had that freedom last year, our offense started purring.

I for one know I was happy when the Browns grabbed Chud, I felt he was the main reason the Offense started off slow. I mean there was no reason to under use the RB's like he did last year. And I hope that everything I'm hearing now out of OTA I will see when the season starts. And I'm glad that Shula has learned from his the past I really hope he can take us to another level, I want him to do for our team like what Caldwell did for the Ravens when he took over there Offense. They really took off when that move was made.

not surprised about chud. still uncertain about shula and not completely thrilled about the offense being more predictable on forst downs, but whatever. the players are apparently buying in and happy to have someone other than chud so there's that. i hope he does well.

aside from brandon williams being hurt, sounds good about everyone.

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
