Why are we leaving the plan?

I feel like we have suffered as a Buzzcats fan for the last several seasons, waiting for an opportunity that we could have next season. 

 

Imagine, if the Supersonics blew their load and and got impatient and never got their chance at Kevin Durant? 

 

We have been on a path since the blowing up of the playoff team.  I loved the plan.  I feel like it makes perfect sense for a team in our situation.

 

Signing Al Jefferson and J.R. Smith type players would be great starting in the 2014-2015 season.  

But not now, not since we have all waited for the opportunity to have a franchise player.  

 

Signing these guys now makes us competitive for the next 2-3 seasons.  

Getting Wiggins, Parker, Randel, makes us possible contenders for the next 10 seasons. 

 

Imagine if the Panthers had signed some middle of the road Quarterback before or during the 2-14 season, and we lost our shot at Cam Newton?  

 

Stay. The. Course.

Plans either work, or don't work.

The plan is not over yet.

Timetable for this and building a team takes time. I agree. But the plan isn't Working. So therefore u need to inject talent in the lineup. So why wait until next year when nobody of Jefferson's caliber would sign anyways if we can just get him now

Can we merge threads like this into the other 50 where people talk about "the plan"?

It's a valid discussion Zax. The other thread referring to any kind of plan was focused more on the actual FA signings and whether we should or not.

I think it's good we as Buzzcat fans have something to argue about. Should be exciting either way.

Wrote this in the to sign or not to sign thread....

 

summary: Without signing anybody we will probably be picking in the 7 - 10 draft position for 2014 unless we get lucky in the lottery. We haven't been lucky so far soooo the FO decided what is better Al + SG in FA this year or draft pick 7-10. After looking at the draft, they probably decided that FA is better.

I simply disagree with the premise that if we stick we the team we have at the moment, that we would be picking from 7-10. 

 

The team as it stands is easily a 1-5 pick. 

 

Bomb this season, make a deal sometime this season to get another asset for the future. 

 

Just wait one more year, then go all in on the 2014-2015 season.

Talking about patience and letting a "plan" play out reminds me of Marty Hurney and that BS he would say every year.  What good is a plan if you're always in wait-and-see mode?  It's the way to say that what you've been doing, who you've been drafting/signing, and your coaching staff, hasn't been working out. 

 

Fans want their team to win, the sooner the better.  At least to be competitive night in and night out.

 

I say if you can get talented free agents who actually will sign a contract to play in Charlotte, do it.

Yeah that Marty Hurney BS landed us Cam Newton which will keep the Panthers competitive for the next 10+ years. 

 

You guys are the same people who would have been thrilled to have signed Jason Campbell and go 6-10, instead of bombing the season and getting Cam Newton.

Yeah lets just tank until we finally get lucky and get a star player in the draft

 

Or we could just sign an all star C/PF and the 6th man of the year and pretend that we drafted them and get on with the plan..which is winning

Sorry op but your comparisons don't really work here. The sonics had Ray Allen and were a team with the potential to relocated. (obviously they did) Sonics literally got Durant as soon as Allen left and hit the jackpot in every draft for the next 3 years. We were not so lucky. We get shafted every time. We missed on the number 1 pick now 2 seasons in a row. They panthers got lucky with Newton kind of like OKC did with Durant. Oden went first and people said Durant was too skinny and would get pushed around in the nba. The panthers tanked for Luck and the guy stayed in school. We took Newton when he was projected to go mid to late first round. The fact that about 10 teams are tanking this season makes our plan even less likely to work and it already hasn't played out in out favor.

Not to mention next year's FA class is LOADED and a lot of the mid-tier guys (like a Jefferson/JR Smith) could be cheaper next year with all the guys available.

 

I still think that even adding Jefferson/Smith (if we do), the Horncats still suck pretty bad next year.  I just don't want anywhere near the line where we could lose our 1st rounder next year.

      I encourage you to go back and watch his college play. Notice how he immediately backpedals to 10 yards behind the LOS on almost every snap. You can't do that in the NFL. Your OTs have no chance of keeping those freak show edge rushers off of you. You can't create a pocket that deep. If you drop back like that in the NFL on a regular basis you're basically on your own. Your OL can't do a whole lot for you. Bryce can chuck it when he has an airport runway in front of him to step up into. There's a reason why "ease of generating velocity" is such a talking point evaluating QBs. It's not how hard or how far you can throw the ball given a perfect situation. It's how hard and how far you can throw the ball in a typical NFL game situation and that's where a lot of my concerns with Bryce were going into the draft. There were way too many plays in his college tape that if you were watching that purely in terms of translating it to the NFL it just didn't work.

      Yeah, like I said I get it. From a revenue perspective I'm not a good customer for them. They've probably intentionally tanked offline franchise mode to try to get people online. Again, not a terrible strategy from a pure business perspective. I can't really be mad at them for doing what's good for business but yeah, from my perspective it still sucks.

      Ok let me be more specific. Smith was a stud before Newton got here do you not agree? Yes, LaFell improved under Cam but then had his best years after leaving the Panthers with Cam as the QB and going to NE. So he improved playing with someone else. Olsen was in Chicage the year before Cam arrived and statistically had the same numbers his first year with Cam.  Hope that's clearer for you.
