My camp thoughts after today. Expect a conservative, run offense.

Recommended Posts

I finally went to camp today.  Some thoughts.  Cam's passes have a lot more touch and are a lot more accurate. I left a little early but aside from one pick 6, Cam completed all his passes. Check downs,  passes down the middle, a bomb to Ginn on the right sideline. He made em all.

Day and night difference this year from last year at camp as far as our offense. Last year, Cam ran the ball A TON at camp. I didnt see a single zone read formation play today nor not once did Cam run.  What I saw today was a lot of power i formation, short 7-10 yd passes down the middle and check downs to the RBs. This offense will look quite a bit like Fox ball. Expect a lot of ground and pound this season. BTW, this is a very good thing.  There is nothing more I love than when teams absloutely dominate time of possession.  Some people love sacks, some love safeties, some love forced fumbles.. Me?  I love seeing the opposing QB on the bench, looking half asleep from boredom for nearly an entire quarter. WOO! Im getting chills just thinking about it. Show me a team that dominates time of possession and I will show you a playoff team everytime.

AJ Klien impressed me. Shame he hasnt got that much attention but he looked explosive and powerful in LB drills today.  A lot of people are in straight up panic mode about our O line. But we all forget we might just have one of the best if not THE best front 7 in the league.  I will reserve my judgement on the o line until I see them play average-below average Ds.

Cam is A LOT more vocal and relaxed. He was very vocal today and showing signs of a true leader. Ginn in my book is a lock for number 3 WR. Gettis is as good as gone.  Overall, solid practice.

my thought is, the defense will score all the points.  the offense just needs to not to fug up.

All the offense needs to do is possess the ball as long as possible. Dominate time of possession. I know many wont agree with me, but if I had to choose to score TDs in just a couple minutes, or just score FGs but possess the ball for nearly a full quarter. Im taking FGs all day long along with dominating time of possession.  I dont mind if the final score is 6-3 us.  Thats one thing i didnt like about Chud, he hated that football. He wanted to score way too fast and all that does is A. risk interceptions and B. tire out the defense because we would score so fast the D is right back out there.

Im a big fan of ground and pound  fox ball, I hate shootouts.

Worth noting....Cam hasn't run zone read in preseason either much if it all under Chud....and we were pretty much always very conservative in those practice environment.

This isn't a knock on RBs....but the best offensive player in Carolina is Cam Newton. Shula knows that or he should.

lol...Cam Newton is off to historical offensive production and yet people want us to be a run focused team? Newton is a better offensive force than any RB we put in the field. They should compliment and aid him....that's it

Actually Cam ran a ton during training camp last year, it almost seemed like he was taking off every play.  Make no mistake, this is going to be a very traditonal, power run game offense under Shula.

Meh, NFL is a different game now. Number 2 and 3 team in terms of time of possession missed playoffs (Pitt and Chicago). Baltimore finished regular season 30th in time of possession.

Even fox shitcanned fox ball for the most part (well as long as Peyton is on the team anyways) and Denver is a much better team for it

There's no place for ball control based offenses in this league anymore

I disagree, go back and look at the last half of the season when we went on a run. A majority of those games we dominated time of possession in a big way and we just so happened to win those games.  You will never get anywhere play Chud ball, passing it 30 yds at a time hoping to score to right away. With a good D, you can win championships playing ball control

If this offense looks like Foxball....Gettlemen, Rivera and Shula should all be fired.

We have Cam. You don't play Foxball with that type weapon.

We have a spotty OL, an old RB , an injury plagued RB, a rookie RB, and a FB. Even if your QB sucks you would need a great D front to back to attempt to be a legit contender playing Foxball with that. Our best player this year in the secondary could easily be the Raider reject....bc he walked into such a weak cast.

The offense has been statistically the best it ever was in the last two seasons, the problem has been engineering late game drives.

Every consistently good team is going away from ball control or already has. The only teams that still do it only do so because they have no QBs that can throw.

You do realize that practices focus on certain elements of the game, I'm more curious as to what they do in the 2nd and 3rd preseason games, then what happens in anything else before the season starts.

Our #1 goal this preseason is to make it out injury free
