OK, it's a little early but I'm not so sure we need Hixon. And, how 'bout Gettis?

I am thinking that AE, Adams, Ginn, and/or Gettis (yes, Gettis) may be able to do what Hixon can do, and possibly do it better.  The receiving corps looked pretty damned solid. AE looks very game.

Gettis was actually somewhat impressive out there to my surprise, and after actually seeing him in a game, in my opinion it's too early to throw dirt on him.

Hixon is severely overrated by this board, going off of what he did previously. Everyone has been writing Gettis off b/c of him, yet his numbers at best were only as good as Gettis' rookie season. Not to mention, Hixon is older and has been extremely injury prone throughout his career.

I just like the fact that Gettis showed up when the lights came on, hopefully he keeps it up I'm really pulling for him and want him to make the team.

Yeah, everything we heard out of camp wasn't good at all, but Gettis obviously wants to remain a Panther.

I feel like Joe Adams is going to make the team just from the punt returning position. Then, if he ever learns to hold onto the ball, he could really learn a lot from Smitty. Smaller guy, punt returner, has already been on the quick screen passes, etc.

I feel like our receivers go:

Smitty

LaFell

AE

Ginn

Hixon

Adams

Leaving Gettis and Pilares on the outside, looking in. Sure, Gettis had a very good game tonight, but he was playing against third string CBs. I'm hoping for the best from the guy, but right now I feel like he's on the outside. That could all change during the course of the next three preseason games, though.

Backup returner will be tough to make with Barner on the squad.  Gettis or Adams need to make their case running routes and making solid hand catches.

Pilares held his own also! Our WR corp looked decent ..

In what world did Pilares hold his own? Completely uninspiring KR return as usual, straight ahead at average speed into the first gunner. As a WR he had 1 easy catch and one slant where he completely blew it and wasn't even paying attention to the ball as it zipped right by him.

    • If Thielen’s mentorship leads to XL being a reliable pass catcher, it will be worth every penny of his contract. Ask yourself this, who else is going to help him? It’s a crowded room and every WR is fighting for play time. They don’t play this game for funsies. There is serious $ on the line for these dudes. They can’t afford to be buried on the roster come contract #2 time. This is their shot. I’m not saying the intentions are nefarious, but there is contract money riding on play time for these dudes.  Coker has #2 square is his sights. better believe that. Why would he help XL? Would you?  Moore? Nah. JAG.  Horn knows he’s a fringe WR. He used to hustle neighborhood kids in to racing growing up. I don’t see him being the helping kind.  Hunter? He’ going to be too busy battling Coker for the #3 spot.  There is literally no better person for the mentor role for XL than Thielen.
    • but...isn't that sort of highlighting WHY we are moaning about AT?  Right now our primary weapon (based on offensive reps, targets, etc) is an old slow WR who we overpay that doesn't really get open nor do anything with the ball in his hands.  and we are at the bottom in spending in terms of pass catchers.  Maybe the front office shouldn't of arranged the roster so that it is only .....AT (debating retirement) and cast of unproven hopefuls youngsters.    I mean, the AT complaint is really not about AT.  It's about the front office.
    • I'm encouraged and confident the Panthers won't be the worst team in the NFL next year.
