By week 3 against the Giants...

Mr. Scot

A. The starting offensive line will include...

B. The starting offensive line should include...

(explain your answer on the second)

Do we stand pat, hope for a surprise final cut, look to unsigned free agents, hit the waiver wire, sign a veteran after week one, trade for help, something else...what?

How do you configure the O-Line for the rest of the season?

i'll wait to see how film studies grade garry williams before passing judgement, but i think it's abundantly clear to everyone that he's the weak link on that line. the right side looked awful tonight and almost negated anything good the left side was able to accomplish.

so far gettleman has done an outstanding job of righting a ship the was listing heavily after a decade of mismanagement under hurney, even taking situations that seemed they'd take years to fix and working wonders with them. by all accounts he has one of the best noses for free agent talent and roster analysis in the NFL, and he appears to have done well in his first draft.

given the manifest nature of the problem even to idiot fans who are often wrong, it seems difficult to imagine that gettleman isn't more than aware of these problems and working on a plan to correct them given his track record with us so far. i've never been much of a fan of the whole "don't question the team, they know more than us" mentality but in this case i think it's warranted to a large extent, far more so than it would've been under hurney. gettleman has displayed nothing to betray any of the sort of hubris that seemed to embody hurney's roster management.

so to answer the OP i think garry williams will get his shot to start if he can earn the position, but by week one i'm fairly sure we'll have a surprise cut from another team plugged in at guard and starting. no way gettleman ignores this problem, not when the future of the season and the health and well-being of our franchise quarterback are on the line.

I'd agree that the work isn't done yet.

That said, I wouldn't be completely surprised to see the current lineup start week one.

I'd like to hope that changes come no later than week two.

It is possible they address the problem sooner (I know I'd feel better if they did) but I'm not sure that's gonna happen.

The right side of the line is bad.  But sometimes Silatolu is just as bad, but it's like no one see it.

I feel like the Panthers will be picking up one maybe two guards once the cuts are made across the league. There will certainly be veterans cut as room is made for the younger guys. Another team's aging but solid veteran could come here and be a bright spot on the line for us.

I saw him pull after the snap and completely whiff on his guy because he skipped him like there was a better block on the 2nd level while DWill (IIRC) gets stuffed for no gain.  Could have been a nice 4-5 yarder.

although I'm not saying he's just as bad as Williams.  I do agree he still has a lot of improvement ahead of him.

I hate to tell you but anyone we pick up at this stage based on final cuts is not going to be a starter. He might be a backup but won't be better than who we have. No, the group you see now is who is going to start this year.

I buy that after first cuts. The vast majority will be scrubs.

Most "wow, they cut him" transactions don't happen till final cuts, but may not happen at all.

Again, won't surprise me if the sequence of events is 1) stand pat through week one 2) look horrible in week one 3) sign someone before week two.

That might suck, but better late than never.
