I grow less and less fond of Mike Mitchell.

I'm willing to see how he pans out, and it's always nice to have some attitude on your defense, but this is certainly something I'm going to keep an eye on this season. We Panthers fans are well aware of Mitchell's history of being sort of a cheap player, as we saw in the Oakland game last season. His reputation preceded him here to Carolina, and we heard numerous times throughout camp of a Back or Receiver getting up and getting in his face after a dirty shot or some such. This led into the preseason games, where I've seen him make multiple questionable hits, including a flag last night for roughing the passer that pulled Philly out of their own endzone, along with extracurricular pushes and shoves after the whistle.

As I said, it's always nice to have some attitude, but if Mitchell brings nothing but a cheap Raider attitude this season and proves good for not much more than flags while living up to his reputation of being average in the most crucial part of a Safety's skillset (his pass coverage) then I wouldn't mind his leash being a short one. I like DJ Campbell and wouldn't mind tossing him out there to let him grow and not give the enemy free yards with boneheaded cheap shots.

I will no doubt give him a chance, I'm not calling for his head yet, and, to emphasize it again, I'd love some aggressiveness in the defensive backfield (or the opponents backfield for that matter, as he has shown himself capable as an effective blitzer, a useful quality in our brand of 4-3), but I will be watching.

I was livid about that cheap shot he put on Foles that took away what could have been a safety. Luckily I think he got called to the sideline immediately afterward, where I hope he got an earful. This ain't the old NFL, those yellow flags will fly (unless your name is Jerome Boger, that is.) You want to smash someone with the ball, go for it. But be smart.

Our defense has needed some nasty guys for years now....too many guys play nice IMO.

My issue with him is to date he doesn't have the good play to go along with the nasty streak

You'll see a lot of pouters come in this thread and overreact and probably drop childish internet cliches like "butthurt" and "whiney" that I'm not crapping rainbows but the fact of the matter is if in two months Mitchell maintains his attitude and level of play, he's a prime suspect to be one of the most hated Panthers this decade.

He has the physical ability, and he has a lot of good skills in his repertoire, I just need to see him step it up. This team sorely needs him to.

Can I ask you why you posted the picture in the thread? Mitchell is just in the background, if nothing else post a gif of his roughing the passer penalty. Smith straight up throws guys in questionable situations, hardy face planted palmers back and Josh Norman has an attitude that might cost is one day. Seems like your trying to justify why you dislike the Raiders more so than why Mitchell should be watched. I like everything you just mentioned and as long as he doesn't nail a guy over the middle head to head I'm fine with it. We need vocal guys other than Cam who will step up and propel this team. If Mitchell can keep his head up and not have any senseless penalties the attitude is invaluable.

Attitude is one thing. Being a bonehead is something else. I too have noticed some of the boneheaded tendencies... Hard to imagine a switch being flipped come regular season.

On the otherside of it he seems to have built a good rapport with other players, notably Godfrey. Let's hope its more preseason anxiety than sheer cheap stupidity.

It seemed like we had Philly in a tough spot on their goal line . You think, "what would have happened" if Mitchell wouldn't have committed such a blatant cheap shot. What if we would have stopped them on the first drive? Would that have given our D the confidence to shut down Philly? We'll never know obviously but I would have liked to have seen it. I have my doubts because with those dink and dunk passes, it plays right into the weakness (or one of the weaknesses) of this team, which is the secondary. Philly's offense gets guys into space and forces DB's to play one on one and wrap up and tackle, and if TD or Keek isn't their to bail them out, they're going to get torched.

Back to Mitchell, I need a bigger body of work before I decide. It did send up a red flag telling us that you may be right. He might just be a guy who can't keep his emotions in check, which could end up costing us points. If that's the case then I don't think he'll be here next year.

    • It wasn’t completely his fault, but outside of two throws and one or two scrambles he didn’t do much to help. His accuracy was all over the place, numerous passes that were placed poorly and didn’t give the receiver a good chance to catch the ball or do anything with it after. He also continues to display terrible pocket awareness. Even the sacks could have been avoided, they weren’t immediate like the pressure we got on Shough at times. Bryce just often has no feel for pressure and stands there waiting to get sacked after numerous seconds have passed.
    • I really fuging hate this era in so many ways.  I look at those Adin Ross and Neon kids, and I just wonder why tf are they famous?  Why would anyone be desperate enough to gain THAT audience that they’d risk money, career, disciplinary action to go up there and associate with those fuging dweebs?  And back in my day, racist peers got their ass beat.  And not endorsing or approving bully culture, but checks and balances and all…  had those two been bullied, or at the very least humbled, they wouldn’t be famous and glorified for being the fuging idiots they are now.  It seriously pisses me off… they both have done and said multiple, openly racist stuff and major media keeps pushing them, talking about them, and propping them up… and then dummies like Puka who don’t need the platform or exposure lend their celebrity to them.  fuging idiot… and even the other streamers, I don’t get - Speed, Kai…  I don’t understand making nobodies famous at all, but there is at least entertainment value to some degree there, and I could see how young, impressionable kids would find them something to aspire to (sadly), or view as “cool.”  But Ross and Neon?  They’re just shitty, shitty nerds with big ass mouths. I’ve went back recently and watched some classics (in two very different eras and categories 😂)  like Robocop and Idiocracy.  And what I find fascinating is how both movies illustrate how stupid society became by showing what the citizenry is entertained by.  In both, society became anti-intellectual and the citizenry were entertained by lowest denominator, primal-type absurdity - poo like, “Ouch! My Balls!”  Or on Robocop, a guy is a watching a show where they are smashing cakes on ladies’ breasts and then a guy says a line as the camera zooms in like, “I’d buy that for a dollar!” and the audience thinks it’s hilarious.  That’s where I feel like we are now.  Like who watches that clip with Puka and thinks any of that poo is funny or cool?  If I was Puka, I’d honestly be wondering why tf I’m hanging out with these beta ass, racist, cretin ass weirdos.
    • 7 wins this year and some of those against really good teams and yall think Canales might get fired? Lol Good luck getting a better coach in here if that happens.
