What to do with Ben Gordon?

I'm guessing he ends up being part of a multiple team trade around the deadline to move a star/make the cap work for some team. Nets us a pick in the process.

if someone comes along now with the right offer, I'd take it.  But he won't

be part of our team this year unless we suddenly start winning.

 

If we do, he'll get some time because he can score.  If not, he'll sit while

younger guys develop until the deadline, when we'll showcase him to get

the best value.

Unless there is an offer we can't refuse, let him play out his contract.

 

Don't want to trade him for a bunch of scrubs whose contracts happen to equal 13 million (or whatever it is) and be on the hook for those contracts past this season.

 

Unless you can trade him for a high caliber player at a position of need, that is young, don't mess with that contract.  wait until next offseason and use that money wisely.

His expiring contract is valuable to us.  If we don't trade him, we will be able to attempt to get another player similar to the caliber of Al Jefferson's contract in next year's free agency.  That is more valuable than any of the assets we could get back for him right now in a trade.  Ben Gordon's value is his contract and no longer his skillset although I feel he can still contribute to an extent.

not sure some of you guys understand the value of an expiring contract.  If a cash strapped team is going to lose a player to FA because they can't afford to resign him, they'll take Gordan and give us what we want...most likely draft picks.

 

It has to be the right deal, but I'd hate to see Gordan gone for nothing.  Because he is gone anyway.  He'll never play for us again.  

 

But if we don't get the right deal, no biggie...we'll still enjoy the cap space.

There is a lot of value in his contract. The problem is if we trade him, unless the other team is way under the cap, we will have to receive a near equal amount of contracts back.

If that team is strapped for cap space the following season that means we would have to get back multi year contract or contracts that equal Gordon's.

In other words we can't just trade him.for picks, we will have to take on a longer term contract or contracts.

Unless another team is offering a high quality player for a similar price it doesn't make sense to trade him. We wouldn't lose him for nothing, we would lies him to keep cap space for free agency.

NBA rules are different than other sports.

Kobe and Melo potential targets? In what world? I mean, seriously? 

 

Granger/Gay maybe would be the caliber of guy we could bring in, but what to do with MKG? Not to mention having to overpay both to get them here. I'm not willing to curb MKG's progression to start one of those 2. 

Deng, injuries. MKG factor.

 

Gortat, again...Zeller progression/already overpaying Jefferson.

 

Humphries, just no to crazy Kardashian ex.

I really believe waiting untill trade deadline and move for assets and or picks would be the smart option, but I just couldn't pass up voting for having him dribble will Clifford/Ewing are talking.

This is completely wrong.  Not even close to right.

 

If a cash strapped team is going to lose a player in free agency, then that player is himself on an expiring contract.  For instance, if the Bulls couldn't afford to re-sign Luol Deng after this year then his contract will expire after the season.  Why on earth would they trade him for Ben Gordon and give us assets...both contracts are expiring?  They would be giving us free assets... and a better player.  I'll just let logic prevail on this one.

 

Expiring contracts are valuable, as teeray mentioned, when a team wants to get rid of a bad contract with multi-years left on it.  Instead of paying a guy $13mil a year for the next 2 to 3 years = $39mil.  They trade the player for an expiring deal and only have to pay for the one expiring year and then open up team cap space in the off-season to allow them to be flexible in free agency.

 

Another different example is if a playoff team feels that they are in need of a shooter or off the bench scorer and truely believe that it will improve their chances of advancing in the playoffs.  They would then trade future picks, young potential players that are not yet producing, or cash... for Ben Gordon and hope that he can impact them in their playoff run.

 

As I said before, Ben Gordon's contract right now is more valuable to the Bobcats then it is to anyone else.  That could easily change during the  season once teams see where their holes are or injuries start to happen...
