Why were there no designed roll outs for cam?

We practice every day.  College teams never play preseason games and do fine, no reason to think professionals can't perfect stuff in practice.

There is no way in hell you should be running read option, bootlegs, or many screens in the preseason with your starting QB.  Protecting our QB is more important than fan gratification of preseason glory on offense

Whoa big boy! I'm not looking for any preseason glory on offense.  What I'm looking for are positives.  What I am doing is comparing our preseason history to our perennial slow season starts.  I'm not saying that we should send our playbook to Seattle, so to speak, but based on history maybe we should've changed our preseason approach a little, just a little.  Besides, it really only helps the 1st game because after that there will be tape for 30 other teams to study.

Do we sacrifice a season (because that's what a slow start gets us) for the sake of a few plays in preseason?

Do we not believe our offense could stop a defense when they know what's coming?  How did that work last night?

Remember last year's preseason? Almost no TD's. How did our season start after that?

Yeah what I saw all night last night was a team that is trying to protect their QB's body through playcalling that is not able to protect him through offensive line play.

LOL, you serious?

You think putiing Cam in the pocket behind this OL is a play call that PROTECTS him?

The one time he came up lame last night was when the weight of the entire Raven DL collapsed on him through our swinging-door OL.

First game of the season we barely ran the ball at all and laid an egg.  We scored 35 points the second game of the season.  The third game of the season we had only one 3 and out but had too many turnovers and untimely penalties, and then the fourth game of the season we scored 28 points.

In general, college teams do 4 weeks of Spring practice that includes multiple full-contact, full-speed scrimmages plus a full-contact, full-speed end-of-Spring game (usually with no-contact jerseys on the QBs).

Then they follow that up with 4 weeks of pre-season practice with multiple full-contact scrimmage (sans QB contact) prior to the first regular season game.

And EVEN THEN its common for college teams to gradually open up the playbook over the first 2 or 3 games.

Totally different. Not even comparable.

College has much more time to prepare, can prepare using more full-contact, and can often have the luxury of limiting their playbooks early in the season.

The NFL? Well, the labor contract prohibits most full-contact "practice". And the only full-speed, full-contact "practice" they are allowed are THE PRESEASON GAMES. They may be boring, but they're important, especially so in the modern era when practice is so limited.

And woe be it to the team that isn't prepared and competent with their full playbook from Game 1 in the NFL. Those are likely to be the teams drafting high the next Spring.

We all know how horrible our o-line is yet they called no roll outs for him and just let him drop back to get sacked or pressured. However as soon as clausen comes in he rolls out of the pocket for a pass. Does that make sense to anyone? Why did they call none for cam but for clausen?

I mean, have you seen Jimmeh in the pocket? I'd roll him out every chance I got too. Ups his chances of survival.

we will have a full playbook by game one.  And which would you rather have, a touchdown in the preseason, or a healthy Cam Newton?

Everything we will do in the preseason will be to protect our QB.  That is smart.  They have been running this offense for 3 years now and 40 games over the last two seasons counting preseason.

They aren't learning a new offense or new concepts.  They have 32 games experience running these plays against live competition in regular season games.

If they can't do it by now, running 2 or 3 plays against teams in the preseason ain't going to do poo but get someone hurt.

Against the Saints defense we scored 35.  Then lost the next 5 games.  It wasn't until November that we won for the 2nd time.  Hiding anything on offense that preseason helped how?

teeray, I hope you are right.  That we blossom in the first game.  I would love to be wrong. :jig:

I'm not sure of we blossom game one or not.  We may suck on offense game one, and all season.

But I think it is fool's gold to start making judgments on anything about the playcalling or the amount of scores a team has in the preseason.

Atlanta's offense sucked in preseason last season.  They lost 3 of their 4 preseason games.

They did alright at 13-3

Ah, there's the rub.  I'm not judging, just questioning the coach's preseason philosophy.  Okay, maybe a little.

I'm not considering preseason wins & losses, only the offensive play in the games.  And I do not watch any Falcons preseason.

btw, Pete Carroll also held Seattle's offensive play calling back this preseason.  That 1st game is gonna be so exciting!!!

They did several rollouts with Clausen.

I don't think Shula has a problem calling rollouts in general, but I think they want to see Cam run more of a straight ahead offense.  No doubt it will get more creative when the season rolls around.  Not saying we will be more successful, just that there will be more diverse playcalling.

Of course, fans will still complain and blame the offensive coordinator as they have for the last 9 years.

Tell that to Barner, Brandon Williams, Gettis, and other guys trying to survive cuts and make their first roster.

Hey I am going to put you in but the play we are running is crap so you'll probably be tackled for a loss, or the pass will be defended really well. Don't worry though its just preseason. Smh
