Ron Rivera et al close to ruining Cam Newton

Kevin Greene

Recommended Posts

The Ron Rivera regime, initially blessed with a gift like Cam Newton has systematically moved away from Newton's strengths in favor of a poorly conceived, sloppily executed offense performing at an increasingly ineffective rate every Sunday.

Team P.R. staffs from time to time send out emails touting the accomplishments of their players.  Few such emails raise more eyebrows than the one circulated today by the Panthers.

We all know by now that rookie quarterbackCam Newton is having a special season.  The email from the Panthers’ P.R. staff makes clear just how special it has been.

Newton already has set the all-time rookie record for passing yards, with 3,893 and counting.  And he has surpassed Peyton Manning’s 3,739 yards in 1998 with 83 fewer attempts.  That’s right, 83 fewer attempts.

Several weeks ago, Newton broke the all-time quarterback record for rushing touchdowns.  He has 14.

Those 14 rushing touchdowns put him only one score behind a three-way tie for second place in all-time rookie rushing touchdowns.  Mike Anderson, Clinton Portis, and Ickey Woods each scored 15.  (Eric Dickerson holds the record, with 18.)

Combining the 14 rushing touchdowns with 20 passing touchdowns, Newton has shattered the all-time mark for total touchdowns accounted for by a rookie, surpassing the 27 from Charlie Conerly of the Giants in 1948.

We're a very short year plus from Cam dominating the NFL.

The  only question is where will Cam be when he re-establishes himself as one of the NFL's best?

I don't have that much issue with the scheme.

It's the personnel that bother me, the OL (other than Kalil and a healthy Silatolu) and the receiving corps (outside of Smith and Ginn) are both big issues.

The receivers aren't helping Newton stat/performance wise, but the bigger concern for me is the OL getting him killed :(

We blame Fox and bounce him. He took the Broncos to the playoffs with The Golden Calf of Bristol at QB and has them 5-0 this year. We blame Chud and he goes to Cleveland. He has them 3-2 and leading their division. Now the blame is shifting to Cam. We'll probably let him leave and he'll reestablish himself as a Pro Bowl QB. If that happens, will people finally admit that the problem is the Panthers organization?

At some point we have to stop making excuses and just accept that Cam can really suck at times. It wasn't the coaches, it wasn't the offensive line. Cam sucked today. He held the ball for an eternity on literally every snap. It was a miracle we moved the ball at all. He made bad throws and he has consistently taken bad sacks for the past three seasons. Drive killing sacks. Sacks that move us out of field goal range. Sacks that results in turnovers. That is on him. He has plenty of time to throw the ball away and try again next play.

No issue with letting Chud go, honestly.

As to Fox, he had legitimate issues, and they showed up in the playoffs last year.  That said, I do think he'd have had more success with a GM other than Marty Hurney.

It wasn't the offensive lines fault, except the announcers even pointed out he was under pressure, Rivera even said the protection was bad. You have no idea what you're talking about, and probably couldn't coach a Pee Wee football team if you tried.

I can count seconds. Cam held the ball for too many of them.

I Think Newton needs to finish above # 15 in NFL passing before that takes place.

They have slowed down his progression as a NFL QB. A 3rd year vet should not be making rookie mistakes: staring down receivers, bad footwork, bad decision making, etc. I'm sick of this coaching staffs; every single one of them. Well except Proehl.

The best we've been able to give Cam is Shula and now a former bust in Ken Dorsey?

Are receivers getting open on these holds? At this point you can't put the blame on one player, a lot about this team needs to be improved and upgraded upon. But one thing that affects all parts of the team is the coaching staff. Those guys definitely need to improve or move out of here.

I'd like to think better coaches could help Cam develop. Still, he's not making the most of what he has. He can learn from his mistakes. He knows what they are and he continues to make them. This is an offensive league and I'm ready for an offensive coach. Rivera is an idiot. The fans screamed for 4th and 1 and he delivered against a strong defensive team....
