Run game....

CRA

Recommended Posts

Oh, and CRA is Williams bashing.

Pretty sure I laid out how this is a collective run game issue....OL and Shula being the biggest components. Williams looked good today out of our creative looks....which is the point of the thread. Creative vs traditional.

I think we need a combination of things. 1) a real fullback. If we're going to run this offense, we need a true, blocking fullback. 2) we need younger backs. Fresh legs. DWill is old at this point, and JStew has had foot injuries his entire career. 3) better oline.

Meh, short week.....we play Tampa on Thurs. I enjoyed the win already.

I am ready to talk Tampa and moving on.

Ok, Tampas run D is gross(in the they're really good way). The run game will probably be less than stellar next week although we still run the ball close to 40 times, Cam throws about 25 passes, no Ints again, Panthers win, we get to 4-3.

Now, how bout them Rams?!

Their DL had physical leverage for most the game. Even Kalil was getting manhandled.

While I'm not against more read option, it typically (but not always) implies running it towards or outside the tackles...which is something we should be doing already given our guard play.

I feel like we are a boxer with a bad wheel. Our opponents know we aren't well rounded so they can gameplan us tougher.

We can't protect sow developing routes. This limits us to short passes, screens, and the run. They are playing the line of scrimmage. What I would like to see is Cam sell the play action better and go down field. Sometimes his play action fake is so nonchalant I wonder why he does it at all. If he can sell that hard maybe Ginn gets behind the Safeties for a big play.

Also you have to keep in mind we lost Amini whom could really run block. Sure Amini would make mental errors but when he was on point he was very solid.

Our offense was not perfect today. I'm pretty sure we got help with penalties on every scoring drive. Maybe we would have scored without the penalties we will never know.

I think once we get Stew back we'll see more shotgun/readoption/pistol runs. Dwill had always been an Ace Formation back. His entire style of play is based on it. It's easy to key in on it no matter what formation you use and it explains a lot of his stuttersteps once he gets close to the line. Stew is more used to running out of those crazy oregon shotgun formations and Tolbert is just a bowling ball. As for Kenjon, I think once he's fully healthy we'll see more of him.

That's a good point. Their DLine was winning the battle at the line as well. Kalil got wrecked on the safety.

Well, the lack of run had a lot to do with that AZ loss....being one dimensional has been historically bad for Newton

But Newton looks to be improving with his short pass game of late.. Shula as well in terms of calls. That has always been the implosion under Newton when there was no run and we were basically still just a deep vertical pass team.

If I have one critique left on Cam it's that he still has a slight hesitation to tuck and go when those deep ins/outs, posts and double moves don't immediately show themselves open. I want him bailing out and creating in space more than standing there with DumbBell swatting at air.
