god damn that's going to suck. i was in southern luzon in 2009 when a typhoon emong smashed the island... i caught the periphery and it was still insane. the bus i was taking from manila to legaspi (largely to escape the maelstrom) ended up getting caught in washed-out roads and i found out the next day that entire bridges and roads had been swamped, with other buses dragged out to sea.

and that will pale in comparison to this.

The story I heard about that military base was that the Phils wanted us gone. Badly.

When a volcano was showing signs of erupting, we moved all our equipment out.

The volcano eventually erupted and destroyed what was the naval base. The powers that be saw it was destroyed and said "yep, you can have it. as is."

I didn't think it was the 80s, but I I thought I remembered a story about some of our military raping or killing

a young teen and they wanted us out completely but I'm not sure.

Regardless, this is being ranked as one of the top 5 storms in recorded history.  I was in Myrtle Beach

when Hugo hit, and I can't imagine a 230 mph wind gust

i have lucked out when it comes to natural disasters. i escaped the brunt of emong, and nestled comfortably in legaspi for two weeks next to mayon, an active volcano that holds the distinction of being the world's most perfectly-formed cone... and a month after i flew home it blew its top and half the province was evacuated. then last year i drove across upland ecuador, took a picture in front of snowcapped chimborazo, and saw on the news the next day that it'd erupted out of freaking nowhere and the country was mobilizing to evacuate the surrounding communities.

i'm starting to rethink this russia thing
