Typhoon with 230 mph wind gusts and is making landfall

it's always the storm surge. you can survive wind and rain but when that storm surge comes there's not a damn thing you can do about it

Agreed.

The wind is scary, but nothing like the surge.

You wouldn't think that 3-5 feet of water can do that much damage, until you see it first hand.

When people mention that they want a cane to make landfall so they can have a day or two off work, and have a cane party, it's all I can do to not strangle them on the spot.

Agreed, people that haven't lived thru one have no clue.

When Bertha, Fran and Bonnie came thru we stayed for all of them... no real bad damage but cleanup was a bitch...

We left when Floyd was off the coast of SC but we got spared the worst here...

None of those had winds in excess of 120MPH at any time...  and I saw trees bent in half, it's freaky.

As I said earlier in the thread, I can't imagine staying thru one like Haiyan.  Those kind of winds literally blow structures down... plus the fact that the Philippenes is nothing but a bunch of islands and they had a 20' storm surge, that's really, really scary.

I saw a story about employees at the airport there surviving by clinging to trees because their buildings were destroyed and the water was 10' deep.

One of our friends has family (brother/sister inlaw, nieces and nephews).  The brother has not been heard from since the day of the storm.

I agree that in the storm surge is the worst part, but in the Philippines, the rain and wind are almost as bad because the structures are so flimsy and they have relatively little protection from the elements.  And the area has a number of steep moutains and valleys, so flash floods are an tremendous problem.
