Ranking our O-line

After watching some of our games I find it hard to believe we have a top 10 offensive line, much less a top 5 line.

Yet here it is:

5th overall.

3rd in pass blocking.

8th in run blocking.

9th in penalties.

An abysmal 25th in screen blocking.

Interesting food for thought. Apologies in advance if it's already posted somewhere.

I refuse to believe these stats just by watching our games.  We've gotten much better at pass protection this year, but our run blocking looks terrible.

Yeah DVOA has us at like 13th overall and they consider running of more importance iirc.

Not if Gross hangs up those cleats.

Oh yeah, forgot that blurb.

Stud: Everyone wants to talk about Cam Newton or the defense, but how about Jordan Gross (+22.3)? He’s our second-ranked left tackle on the year and having perhaps his best season to date.

Dud: The plan was probably to phase Chris Scott (-9.4) out of the lineup and replace him with Travelle Wharton, but an injury forced Wharton to the right side. In any case, converted defensive linemen Nate Chandler has stepped in for Scott and had similar problems. It remains the one problem area on a talented line.

Summary: As mentioned, outside of right guard this is a set line. Sure Byron Bell is a marginally below average starter but to have three quality players from left tackle to center in the team gives the franchise a platform to build on. A big part of their rushing success.

Here are some truths--

The OL has been better than advertised.  I used to hate Bell.  I do not hate him any longer--I forgot to hate him.  He is doing a fairly good job.  Wharton was a nice signing--had he not left, it is possible he is where he would have been anyway,

Gross will play another year if we are close--if we don't win it, we will be close.

Kalil is solid.

Chandler has been good when they don't stunt.

PLEASE do not underestimate how good our RBs are doing in pass protection.  They rarely miss their assignment.  That opens lanes for Cam.

    • If you need someone to run your multi-billion dollar business, maaayyyybe don't hire a guy whose previous work experience includes repeated blows to the head and literal brain damage but IDK.
    • Extrapolate that with every QB for that matter. I guarantee you there's quite a bit of missed opportunities and yards left on the field for everyone. Many NFL QBs deal with WRs not putting in A+ effort, subpar o-line play and other deficiencies. The great ones are able to rise above these issues and create opportunities for plays. Guys like Josh Allen and Patrick Mahomes can both play in and out of structure, as well as find ways to get yards when things break down and mask mistakes by throwing guys open, creating opportunities from nothing, etc. Bryce Young has only shown he's able to make things happen when the rest of the team picks up his slack. Very rarely does he create those opportunities himself. When this is a consistent pattern year after year with Bryce where he shows up lackluster, it's a concern. This is year three and he should be elevating the team as a first overall pick this franchise traded up for.  He was far from elevating anyone against JAX. In fact, he needed others to elevate and create for him. Excuses may be fine for a rookie, but this is year three for the first overall pick. Not looking good so far.
    • I think the worst issue is coaching. Countless bad snaps, XL not getting his feet in or trying on runs plays, our centre being down field when he didn't need to be. All seem to be from poor coaching for me. I believe Canales is to soft to rip the players a new one when the fug up. Plus I honestly believe that Canales is slow getting his plays in giving Bryce less time to diagnose and adjust to the defence. Don't worry I could of head butted Bryce for that fumble and the 4th down throw aways but the other plays are explainable to me
