The play calls at the end of the game were NOT playoff caliber

We're one of the best teams in the league on 3rd Down Conversions, but some of these conservative play calls may bite us in the big game. We've been very fortunate so far.

Yes we have been fortunate, our offense has been stagnant at times. That's not to say that it hasn't been able to move the ball at all or score points but it certainly hasn't been our strongest phase of the game. I'll like to see far less 3rd and longs.

With what weapons?

This offense will never reach 2011 levels until we have explosive players. We do not have that.

You are saying we had explosive players in 2011???? We lost Shockey and got Tolbert, and that's it.  We have Ginn now so we should be even MORE explosive.

Shula is bad and was a stop-gap.  Just hope we can ****** Norv now.  Shula has playoffs to show he's what we need but I fear he isn't a long term answer.

I am not a huge Shula fan but Smith in 2011 is better than any weapons we have now. I think Newton is better now, but Smith is not.

Allow me to chime in here............

First I want to express that fact that if I as a lowly layperson football fan can sit in front of my TV and call what plays the Panthers are going to execute and be 80% accurate......then how in the hell are we going to outfox the defense of a NFL team and its coordinator?

Shula's play calling is way too easy to anticipate for anyone with a half a football brain.

Next, Olsen is a good target with good hands but for God's sake boy you are not a WR..........when you catch the ball go immediately north/south in your running you are a TE....even if there is a DB there you will get an extra yard..............

But what does he do? He catches the ball and at least 3 times he hesitated looking for running space like he was Steve Smith and costs us extra yardage trying to get it.............bull your way straight forward.

Next, Williams........cover up the ball when you hear footsteps and know they are catching up with you............also, Williams is a great open field runner in the secondary but flops at the first flick on him in trap plays up the middle or sweeps that take too long to develop.

Most Importantly, Shula and staff....................we must learn to move the chains on average 3 to 4 times in a possession. We have far too many 3 and outs and push our defense to go to the well time and time again.......that will not cut it in the playoffs. Offense needs more time of possession to keep our defense rested.

Design plays that roll Cam out with the option to drop pass to a back if the WRs are covered and/or Cam scramble run to pick up a few yards. Especially if they are on the sidelines where Cam can avoid big hits.

The goal here is move the chains in situation especially late in the game when we need to eat up the clock......

....Cam's feet saved us today but we need more rollout play action passes with back drop pass options and/or Cam runs. We have no business on 2nd and long throwing 25 to 30 yards high risk plays and end up 3rd and long...............move the chains with plays designed to push a defense into too many options to cover like the aforementioned. We need more 3rd and short situations by utilizing the right plays on the first two downs.

I know we are struggling in the communication and capabilities of our WR strategy and suffer from a weak Oline play with trap blocking so make it easier on the Oline and force zone coverage by the DBs with the option rollouts I've mentioned would be a step in the right direction.

At one point I was so upset at the play calling I wanted the Panthers to lose because of Shula to wake him and the staff up..........

I'm glad for the sake of the players we won........they earned it...........Shula did not, and shame on the staff for letting him get away with this same crap week in and week out.

It was not all on the play calling. Cam missed several big plays by throwing the ball too high. The offense will have to step it up a notch to be succesful in the playoffs. Rivera did play it conservative at the end but what confidence has  the offense given him the last 3-4 weeks. We need to get the running game going.

Very astute analysis IMO.

Funny that you mention Olsen's need to go north-south. My son said the same thing during the game.

We won.

I guess you'd be happier with the play calling if they had been more aggressive and lost the game.

They won the game because the Falcons nutted up. It's not too much to ask for your squad to get a fuging first down to put the game on ice.

Chicken poo play calling will only take you so far.

I thought Jimmy Johnson said something that resonated with me as a fan.

He quoted Cam in his interview about how Rivera told him to calm down and relax...about how his teamates all went up to him and say we belive in you I got your back...

Jimmy added well the players have your back and believe in you but this coaching staff needs to believe in Cam a little more on offense too.

I agree bc the drive where we had two comeback routes and the score before the end of the half got Cam in a rhythm and helped his accuracy.

Another play I have wondered where it has gone is the shovel pass that we did 5 weeks ago to Tolbert...just do not see enough wrinkles in the offense to keep defenses off balance.

However its good enough apparently.

    • See my previous post. You're also leaving out that T-Mac was likely hitting a rookie wall, like 95% of rookies do late in their first season, combined with the added attention on him by defenses, which in turn would be why Bryce looked Coker's way down the stretch.  With Coker playing like that to start next year, defenses will have to pay attention to it, which will then also make things easier for T-Mac. All of which is also ignoring that T-Mac will just be a better player next year than he was this year, assuming he works on his game this offseason, which we all know he will be.  If a player who was already your clear cut #1 comes back even better his next season, you're going to make sure you're throwing it his way more often, no matter who else you have. Again, Coker's added targets won't be at the expense of T-Mac's, they will BOTH be taking targets from the rest of the team.  Not to mention, we should be passing it more next year to begin with, seeing as we'll have both of them hopefully ready to go full speed Week 1, which again, will help both their target totals increase. Coker looks like a really good player, but even the most optimistic person can't say he looks like he has #1 potential, he has very solid to maybe even high end #2 potential.  You're not taking targets away from the reigning OROY who looks like a true Top 15 WR already to get your #2 targets, you increase both of them by taking from the others.
    • Need to crush the hawks tonight. A lose would really damage momentum
    • Sorry, but this is a terrible breakdown that doesn't at all show what you're trying to say/project about T-Mac next year, as it leaves out key information that changes everything, it makes the opposite point that you're trying to. Chase missed 5 games that second season after playing all 17 as a rookie (and still saw more targets that second season). Puka it looks like you projected his stats out to a 17 game season (as he only played 11 games), but even still , when you have 160+ targets as a rookie, there isn't really much room to get any more the next year. Waddle saw an increase in yards, and sure, his targets went down, but he played on a team with a better WR that year who saw 170 targets for 1,710 yards during that 2nd season for Waddle... something T-Mac doesn't have to contend with on the same team (280+ targets for their top 2 WRs, if you don't think T-Mac would see more than 122 targets if him and Coker combined for 287, then you're nuts). Then Olave and Wilson both saw an increase of 19 targets in their second season. You basically just laid out the reasoning for why T-Mac should see at least 20 more targets next year, if not more, which would be a solid increase and put him easily into the Top 10 most targeted WR next season.
