The Cam Newton Foundation, an organization committed to making a positive impact in youth health and community service, handed out gift cards to 60 kids in Auburn and Montgomery for a private shopping spree.

The Foundation teamed up with Academy Sports and Outdoors for the spree. The sporting goods store is the official sporting goods retailer of the Auburn Tigers.

The lucky participants were from the Boys and Girls Club of Montgomery and Wrights Mill Road Elementary in Auburn where Newton mentored during his time with the Tigers.

Each student was given $100 to buy Auburn gear including shirts, jerseys, caps and novelty items.

So why bother...?

I think a kid in need getting a sweater and a little something else is not bad.  I know it is not a life changing event but it helps out.

Yeah it's nice. It's something. But some of his other work is more important. Giving these kids a future is more important than a brand name T shirt.

It's really also not meant for anyone's pleasure. From listening to Cams comments over the season I really believe he has disassociated himself from the perception of the public. One way or another, he feels he is doing what is right and whether it means on hoodie, one pair of shoes, one book, at least someone is impacting their lives.

Agree that giving out gift cards is not a home run.  Point was that even if a charity does not give out life changing benefits such as a house, car, scholarship, etc... it is still beneficial to the recipient(s)

We should not discount the small things.
