NFL.com Article: Rivera won't dwell on questionable calls

Panthers fans can't be blamed if they blow off a little steam at a string of calls that didn't go their way in the first two quarters.

A questionable personal foul call on Mike Mitchell turned a punt into a 49ers field goal on the opening drive. A head-butting penalty on Captain Munnerlyn placed San Francisco back in field-goal range a few minutes later.

Between those two scoring drives, a blatant defensive hold went unnoticed on Patrick Willis' interception of Newton.

Although the precedent had been set early in the game, a pair of late, second-quarter head butts by 49ers offensive players went unflagged deep in Panthers territory.

A Drayton Florence pass interference call in the end zone led directly to the Vernon Davis touchdown catch that gave Jim Harbaugh's team a lead it would never relinquish. On that very play, officials missed 12 men in the huddle, which should have placed the 49ers on the 6-yard line rather than the 1-yard line.

After the game, Munnerlyn called the Florence penalty "horrible" and complained that the 49ers got away with more on the field. "I'll probably get fined for what I'm saying," Munnerlyn added, "but it's how I feel."

Likewise, Mitchell repeatedly used the phrase "terrible" to describe his own penalty, according to ESPN's Bill Williamson.

In the interest of fairness, the Panthers lost their composure, shot themselves in the foot and failed to take advantage of prime opportunities.

If you look at the Box Score, we won most of the stats except for Turnovers.  The difference in the score was the Refs in the 1st half especially.  Take the points the Refs gave the 49ers away and going down the stretch its at best a 13-10 49ers lead late in the 4th.

Yep... Refs change the tempo and pretty much handed 49ers the win. Awful.

As NFL officiating in general continues to get worse with each season, today the Panthers were baited into playing the SF game of late hits, jawing, pushing and shoving. It cost them dearly in penalty yardage.

The relative playoff immaturity and inexperience of the Panthers was exploited today when it came to the game within the game.

It's a relatively simple solution: Act like you've been there before.

Wait. So if the Panthers "act like they have been there before" the refs call the 12 men in the huddle, preventing the TD before the half? And they call the repeated headbuts from the 49ers? Interesting.

The problem with Rivera acting like Jim is that even Jim was penalized for showing his ass - do you really think they were going to start calling a fair game if Rivera did the same? lol

I know this is a Panthers board, but you guys are wrong.

The 12 man wasn't called because the ball wasn't made ready for play yet.  It was the right call.

The head butt was a penalty.

The personal foul was a penalty.

The PI was PI.  He never made a play for the ball, and hindered the WR from getting to it.

There was PI on the play before where Boldin was hit way before the ball arrived that was called.

Patton was pushed to the ground after a play and it wasn't called.

The helmet to helmet called against our linebacker on the sack of Newton was a JOKE call, and continued your drive.

You got 3 points out of what, 10 plays inside our ten in the first half?

We had three straight scoreing drives over 75 yards on your defense.

Your o-line was trash in the second half as we had 4 sacks.

Your coaching staff are idiots.  Cam took a BEATING in the first half, and never looked the same because of it.

Don't blame the refs.

Acting like you've been there means you don't get baited into stupid penalties- head butts, late hits, etc.

There's nothing you can do about what the other team does- you can only control your own behavior. And the Panthers made several stupid penalties in the first half.
