Speculation on Hardy's Future (NFL.com)

Greg Hardy's future with Panthers in question, GM says

General manager Dave Gettleman explained Tuesday that salary-cap challenges have prevented his front office from deciding whether to keep Hardy or allow him to hit the open market as the No. 1 pass rusher available.

"Good Lord willing and the creek don't rise, we'll be out of (salary-cap purgatory) in two years," Gettleman said. "Everybody lets players go. There isn't a team in this league that hasn't let a big dog walk out the door.

"And don't print that I'm saying (Hardy's) going to go. I'm just making a statement. There isn't anybody who hasn't done that. Again, there's a whole, big puzzle we're putting together and he's one of the pieces.

From one of the articles that link from that one:

Hardy is scheduled to become a free agent in March and said it would be a "big honor" if the cap-strappedPanthers use their franchise tag on him (as has been speculated). I asked what would happen if he plays under the tag, then hits on his 2013 goal of a 50-sack season. What kind of contract would he command?

"Just throw together MegatronTom BradyDrew Brees," he said. "Just throw them all together and put that money down for me."

Funny, that's not what he said at all.

Didn't say so directly, but justified or not it's pretty safe to say most who watched that presser came out of it pessimistic about the chances of retaining him.

I still have hope, but if I'm being honest I think he's gone.  The question is just how he goes.

The Fan in me wants to keep The Kraken!!!

The Panthers fan in me realizes that the best thing for the franchise would be to tag him a trade him even if its just for a 2nd rounder. At least we get a long term piece to build the team with with that second rounder, and I'd rather have that than a one year rental. And who knows maybe we can get a first rounder and a higher one at that.

Honestly is there anyone here who wouldn't trade Greg for Sammy in a heatbeat or a true future starting LT?

It doesn't really need to be a high pick as we can package two first rounders then to move up....

These are the things that are best for the team as a whole we get young cheep talent we can build on verse young proven REALLY EXPENSIVE AND HANDCUFFING talent that we all love.

Sadly..... release (trade) the Kraken.

The question people need to be asking themselves re: Hardy isn't if they want to keep him or not. There's not a member of the organization or fanbase that wants to see him go. Instead, people should be asking how much they're willing to sacrifice to keep him. That's the question Gettleman will be wrestling with when he makes his decision. You have to think about how resigning or tagging Hardy will impact our ability to improve other parts of the roster and furthermore if those other parts, in combination, would make our team better than just retaining Hardy will.

Remember when The Kraken was just Greg Hardy? A sixth round rotational pass rusher that fuged himself up by crashing his bike? Damn time flies doesn't it?

Yeah, but also the day we drafted him there was talk that he could turn into a real monster down the road eventually and now he's the Kraken, I think it's fair to say he's progressed exactly like many on here believe he would.

I don't think any of us (me included) know what "tag and trade" really means. I don't think it works the way you're all thinking it does because of the cap implications and the dead money that we wound still count against our cap. Ruff (I think that was his Huddle name) seems to have a good grasp on it.

Long story short....it's not going to be an option.

    • He’s been every bit as much of the problem as anyone else. You cant remove him from that fact, he is just as much part of the team and in THE most important position on the field. But this is the first season he’s seen any kind of continuity in his team and coaches. And he’s shown flashes here and there. But we do need more out of him going forward a lot more if we are going to be successful
    • Bryce isn’t great and super mid. But I think can be a game manager. What do we think is out there? Daniel Jones isn’t going anywher. Mac Jones? Zach Wilson? Pickett. I’m just not sure what’s out there that is much better without having to give up a ton of capital. Rather take one more step closer to contention with our early rounders next year with FS and LB help. Make this  place where dang they got a defense and a WR1 and solid RB room. I can win with that and want to be here
    • AR15 is if Justin Fields was fragile and his teammates hated him. No thanks. Ya'll think you hate watching Bryce Young? Wait until your QB can't even complete a 7 yard pass over the middle, which Fields and Richardson can't do. If the draft class was better, I could absolutely see the Titans moving on from Ward already if they got the #1 pick. But so far the college QB's haven't impressed enough. They'll have flashes, but then follow it up with a very meh game. Kyler is already done in Arizona, but he has a ridiculous contract and he's basically Bryce that likes to scramble, so no thanks. If Lawrence can't produce with that team in Jacksonville, what do you think he'll do here? He's tall Bryce who can throw deep but can't make the 4th down throws and crumbles in the red zone. No thanks. I do think Canales wants to move on from Bryce, his body language says so even in wins. He treated Bryce pretty odd this week and Bryce looked checked out in the Packers game. But unless they make another risky trade, its going to be slim pickings. Basically our hopes lie in hitting early in the draft with a Mateer, Nussmeier, Beck type or finding a random backup free agent that has another gear to hit.  I think even with the draft being wishy washy, 4-5 QB's will be taken in the top 7. A lot of teams are just that desperate.
