Compensatory Draft Picks

Dilla

Recommended Posts

Compensatory free agents are determined by a formula based on salary, playing time and postseason honors. Assuming Hardy walks, and taking into who else may walk or what free agent may be signed in our cap situation, what are we looking at here? Does it look include cut players like (potentially) Godfrey?

I'd guess a 3rd if he continues his current play.

And that would depend on who we signed.  If Hardy walks, and we sign two of WR/OT/CB to starter contracts along with a few other modest deals, we could lose Hardy for basically nothing other than cap space (which is actually a very valuable something).

The formula weighs overall gains vs. losses in FA to determine comp. picks, so it's possible to get a lower pick even if Hardy walks.  But with all of our FA's, my guess is we'll let enough walk to still get a 3rd or 4th for Hardy.  But even if it's a 3rd, it really is more like an early 4th since they are assigned at the end of round three.  That's why if we are going to let him walk anyway, I would be willing to take a 2nd or even early 3rd for him (even though I think he is worth a 1st).

Who did we let walk in 2013 offseason? That is our potential compensatory picks for the 2014 offseason.

Right.

OK so if my memory serves me right:

Jason Phillips to Eagles (2yr deal)

Gary Barnidge to Browns (2yr deal)

Mike Pollak to Bengals (1yr deal)

Louis Murphy to Giants (1yr deal)

We signed

DFlorence

DJ Moore

TGinn

DHixon

MMitchell all to 1yr deals

CBlackburn (2yr deal)

What does all this mean?  we probably won't get a com pick this year.

Ok, gonna go through this...

Free Agents in 2013:

Andre Neblett- Signed by Patriots, played 1 game, waived

Antwan Applewhite-Signed by Dolphins, released before week 1

Jason Phillips- Signed by Eagles 2 yrs - Injured in training camp

Ben Hartstock-resigned

Captain Munnerlynn-resigned

Gary Barnidge- Signed by Browns 3 yrs - 16 games played - 2 tds

Mike Pollak-Signed by Bengals - 8 games active

Derek Anderson- resigned

Louis Murphy- Signed by Giants 1 yr - 14 games played - 6 catches 1td

Nate Ness- out of the league

Dwan Edwards- resigned

Sherrod Martin- rehabbing a bad injury

Cut: James Anderson(1yr) with Bears, Chris Gamble(retired), Kenny Onatolu, Zack Williams, Thomas Keiser(Chargers)

Maybe I'm missing someone but I think that is it....Pretty pathetic. What is worse is the Free agents we signed count against us for compensatory picks. That is Mike Mitchell, Ted Ginn, Quentin Mikell, Chase Blackburn, Domenick Hixon. So in my opinion we will get zero compensatory picks in the 2014 NFL draft.

There is two ways to look at this: We get no picks which sucks. Or we get no picks because we let bad players walk while simultaneously signing good players. Gettleman won free agency last year.

We would definitely get a 3rd for Hardy, but if you aren't going sign him, you could get a lot more by franchising him and trading. I would think you could get a first from a contender or fringe contender, that would be much better than getting a 3rd (which is basically a early 4th since it's at the end of the round).

That said, I would just try to pay the man whatever we have to. He's been great and makes the whole defense better.

But we don't know where we will be picking yet in 2015.  Right?

James Anderson got cut? What happened there? He certainly wasn't a bad player.

Compensatory picks always come after all the regular picks in the round. So if we were awarded another 3rd round pick, it would come as the 33rd pick in that round or later. I don't believe that a team's record reflects on the location of a compensatory pick.

So, yeah, it's basically an early fourth rounder.

    • Those stats are quite pedestrian in today's NFL.   Not homerish at all.
    • Don't forget we only ran like 26 rpo's total or something ridiculous like that. Like the qb isn't comfortable with under center play action, you don't give any pre snap motions or rpo's?
