contract for Ron

one of the reasons we've never had back to back winning seasons is our drafting has been so inconsistent.

its as much on gettleman's shoulders at this point as anyone.

We never had back to back winning seasons because of injuries and inconsistent Jake Delhomme

I never understood the term lame duck coach. Unless you blow past any type of expectations I don't understand why people can't finish the contract and then make a decision

So when a free agent comes in and says why should I come here when I don't even know if you are going to be here a year from now or what system you are going to run, what do you say if you are the last year of your contract?  How do you convince your staff not to jump ship if they think you are not going to be renewed.

There are many reasons to extend him long term and none to withhold it.

If you watch the Panthers you see Ron has developed a ton of talent. My god we prob had the worst talent in the secondary last year and he made those guys look decent. Not to mention our LBs and Dline. On the offense he was smart enought to hire Shula who has developed Cam into a Franchise QB. He even changed his ways to become a winner, something Fox refused to do.

How much does the owner of the Browns owe coaches that don't work for him anymore?

Yeah, it's stupid and misused. If you tell a coach that is on his last year that he has no say in drafting and who makes the roster, that's a lame duck situation. If you tell a coach that is 0-8 that he can finish out the year, but his contract won't be renewed, that's a lame duck situation.

A coach on his last year that is in a good position to earn a new contract has a good deal of control of his own destiny. Hardly "lame duck."

We should rest Cam for the first 2 games next year and see how he does before giving him a long term contract. This panther team have that fluky feel to it. I don't see 12-4. We're a low talent rag tag team. We only have a franchise QB on offense, otherwise nobody worth keeping. If we were to bring in a new coach for this team it is possible that other than QB there could be no returning starter on offense. That's insane! How many other team can you really say that about.

you can't even rationally say that about this team.

Did the Browns go 12-4 this year? No. In fact, the Browns last went 12-4 in 1986.

So why would you compare us to that perennial loser.  In the last 12 years we have had 2 coaches. They have had 2 coaches in the last 12 months and 7 in the last 12 seasons.  Not even close.

    • I think Canales goes before Young in that scenario.
    • But that's the point, if the locker room feels that way, then you're going to upset them by still keeping Bryce around and playing him over the Top 10 pick, as opposed to bringing in a vet to start until the rookie is ready. Again, it goes one of 3 ways... 1. Bryce plays well enough to earn an extension 2. Bryce still sucks and we draft his replacement who starts Week 1 with a new QB as his backup 3. Bryce still sucks, we draft his replacement in the 1st, but they start the season backing up a new vet QB who was brought in to be his mentor. With an OUTSIDE chance at a 4th option where Bryce plays well enough to convince the team to let him play out the 5th year option and then make a decision.  Which I can't see it happening, but there is still a non zero chance of that happening I guess. The only way we draft a QB next year and still have Bryce on the roster, is if we're taking someone in the middle rounds hoping to develop them as a long term backup to Bryce.
    • I hear you. But I am not absolving Legette just because he is from my neck of the woods or anything else.  Tge comment was more about the fans uneven application of blame.  I do agree that there is a noticeable disconnect between him and the QB and that he might do better with a more polished and capable delivery man.  Abd don’t feel that they used XL right, or at least how I expected it to look.  And that could be a function of a reticent WB that shies away from that style of attack. I mean it was either him or Canales that pretty much eliminated downfield from the playbook - even while we see guys running free at times. It Could work if they commit to it.  Whoever isn’t committing.
