Breakdown of Hardy's play in 2013

"That leaves pass rushing, which ultimately determines if defensive ends get paid elite money. On the surface, fifteen sacks looks is an impressive total. One perhaps worthy of a 60 plus million dollar deal. But digging deeper, the numbers aren’t so staggering. Hardy recorded eight of his 15 sacks against Left Tackles in 2013. Only one of the eight, however, came against a franchise caliber Left Tackle, St. Louis’ Jake Long. The other seven came against either mediocre to bad Left Tackles, or rookie Terron Armstead who was making his first career start. Three of the seven came against the Giants Will Beatty, who is regarded as one of the worst pass blocking Left Tackles in the NFL. Another came against the Falcons Lamar Holmes, who played Left Tackle only after the first two options on Atlanta’s depth chart were injured. Hardy had one sack against Tampa’s Donald Penn, who is a middle of the road pass blocker, and two against the aforementioned rookie Terron Armstead. One of the sacks against Armstead came on a stunt where Hardy played on the interior and used the Right End’s move inside to suck Armstead in and give him the edge. A sack that could be credited to the coaches as much as Hardy."

On my phone so I just included this one part of the article. Good breakdown in my opinion. If we could get a 2nd and a 4th like said, I'd be thrilled. An extra 2nd and 4th in a talented draft like this would help us more than re-signing Hardy would imo.

I've been on this train for a while. Hardy nearly disappeared in a lot of games, and if you take away the last couple games, he had an above average season. I would love to keep Hardy if the price is right, but if not, FT his ass, and get picks. Teams out there are thirsty for a player like him. Lets quench it

Exactly. We need to take advantage of this opportunity. If we could get Oakland's 2nd and 4th that would be huge and help full needs with saving money. I really think it's a no brainer if Oakland is willing to do it. There will be guys available in the 2nd and 4th that could contribute this year.

Everyone talks about how deep we are on DL. Now it's time for that to pay off.

I've been thinking about this for a while. Hardy is good, but he also seems to be somewhat of a product of a stacked D-line. I've honestly been just as impressed with Alexander and Addison when they have gotten opportunities to play. And we have Craig Roh on our practice squad, who i think really deserves a chance because he killed it last pre-season.

Overall we have a lot of depth at DE and i think it would be unwise to spend a ton on hardy when his Value over Replacement (VoA) isn't THAT high.

If we could get a 2nd and a 4th for him, i think it would actually make us a MUCH better team. With the depth in this draft i think both of those draft choices would have a chance to make more of an impact than Hardy would on his own.

I love Hardy and I am going to miss him. But he just isnt worth what he is asking for.

^ No not his fault, but our goal is to win Super Bowls, and he sucked in our most important game that arguably cost us the trophy itself. Our best/highest paid players must produce on that stage. Would be a dream to get a 2nd and 4th or anything remotely close.

wait...so it's hardy's fault every left tackle he lined up against wasn't a pro bowler?

most elite pass rushers abuse the weakest opponent the most.

that's what they're supposed to do.

Just like mario williams who got 4.5 sacks cuz he played vs bell the entire game. Sadly hardy gas 26 sacks in 2 seasons he's gonna get paid

He was still the only player on the d-line getting pressure, even though he was up against All-Pro Joe Staley. Where was the rest of the d-line? You people trying to downplay his talent are ridiculous...

I agree a sack is a sack at the end of the day and you can't take away sacks just because they happened against whoever. But when you factor in the money he will command, the amount of needs this team has, the amount of free agents this team needs to sign and the amount of cap space we have, re signing Hardy doesn't out weigh all those things. Good teams know when to let players walk and sell high. Signing Hardy would hurt us long term with guys like Cam and Keek needing new contracts in the coming years. Good teams draft well and trading Hardy for picks would put us in a great position to fill some of our needs for cheap.

    • I just dont get the worry over losing a practice squad player that just went undrafted. Everyone just made their selections. The chances of a team wanting to sign him to an active roster after not selecting him is very low.  If that interested they would have taken him late to evaluate in person. As far as I can tell two qbs were signed off another teams practice squad last season and they were both going in to their 5th season.
    • I enjoyed reading this thread and the usual banter that follows. The only silver lining I can identify right now is we do actually have a couple of young QB's behind him and we do have a nice roster on both sides of the ball built around the most important position. So if the team overall shows some promise but we still falter largely due to a lack of consistent passing output (again) hopefully the decision makers can be free to make the best decision for the team going forward after the conclusion of this upcoming season.
    • I don't really follow the team anymore due to a variety of reasons and consequently have largely stopped posting but I agree that this is a lovely website and community. This forum probably kept me around for years longer than I would've stuck otherwise because of how difficult it was to stop checking multiple times a day. Especially appreciate how lax the moderation tends to be compared to a lot of places, the crew here does a great job. Out of curiousity I decided to try making a new account (solely for testing purposes) to see what exactly is wrong with the sign up process. The issue seems to be that it never sends you an account verification email, thus making it impossible to complete registration. This is likely something to do with the email server upstream, hope it gets fixed. Also, lol
