Charles Davis from NFLN "Mock Draft 2.0"

i would support an RB with the first if we

(1) got rid of jstew and his contract

(2) got serious beef for the offensive line in free agency

(3) signed hakeem nicks and a tight end in free agency

(4) tagged hardy and got draft picks when the raiders snatched him like morons and used those draft picks to fill other needs

if all those things happened i'd be all for it. a young, cheap eddy lacey type would do wonders behind a fixed offensive line and we'd immediately morph to a top-ten offense.

I truly believe that if a team like Cleveland, as an example, were to offer us a 7th round pick for JStew, we would absolutely take it.

I wish we could do everything Phil listed, but that Stew contract is just absolutely toxic. It sucks because while Hurney was busy signing RBs to life-long contracts, the rest of the NFL figured out you can find these guys in the later rounds every draft, plug them in and sign them to cap-friendly deals when their rookie contracts expire.

A RB wasn't even selected in the first round last year, lol... it's likely one wont be taken until the late first this year. There just aren't enough words to express how stupid that deal was. Even if someone offered a 7th for him, which they wont, we'd still get that ridiculous cap penalty, so it makes it pointless anyway.

We may draft a RB-just not in the first.

As for bashing CD for suggesting it, Stew is.often hurt and DWill will be a 31-year old June 1 cut.  Maybe he is thinking we will do as we have done, which is not stupid if you cover 32 NFL teams and about 75 college teams.  You look for patterns.

We know that we are not going to draft a RB in the first round, but there is reason for him to suggest we might-look at our history.

I met him once, and he is a genuinely nice person.  He also knows more football than anyone on this board.  Mock him from your parents' basement if you want....

    • Anybody got a clue what this is supposed to mean? 🤔
    • I figured as much. Hopefully he's just resting up and will be ready for round 3 (if we make it that far.)  Sucks to see. Hes been our best defender (besides Slavin) in the playoffs so far.
    • I've never bought into the idea. There's just too much at stake, even for front office people. Jobs are lost, trust is lessened, lives are altered, reputations are damaged and more. Throw in that the average front office person isn't as young as the average player. They may not have ten years ahead of them to salvage their careers. Any given year could be their last. The only person not guaranteed to suffer some direct form of consequence from losing is the owner, and even there you still have problems (fan reaction, team reputation, revenue, etc). You've also got massive egos in play on that front so it can get personal. Mind you, I do accept that there are "fire sales" in order to build for the future, but even those have consequences. They don't exactly guarantee success either. Poorly run teams often just wind up in the same circumstance a few years down the road. Sorry gus, but my tinfoil hat just hasn't fit me for quite a while.
