How many great players do the Panthers have?

Mr. Scot

interesting that no one mentioned Hardy at any level, 1st tier, 2nd tier, etc, yet everyone wants to tag and trade him. hope you aren't expecting much, if you don't think he's an elite player.

Only one person mentioned Thomas Davis.

I definitely see Davis as a great player.

I didn't mention him because at the moment he's got no contract. If he comes back he would be there though.

depends what counts, currently keek and cam are the only "greats". kalil, davis, and even youngun star could be put there........ i dont consider tolbert a FB, hes a RB. cj is VERY good, but not having any "great" season, just solid double digits seasons. given the recent retirement of gonzo olsen could be top 5, but not great. past greats smity, gross, even ginn was "great" at osu.

At this point in his career he wouldn't start for most teams. He's no longer a top tier NFL Wr.

That doesn't diminish what he's meant to the franchise though.

Most teams are complete idiots then. Jut looking at smiths stats this year alone he is better then most teams number two receivers. I would bet my right( I'm that confident I chose right not left) testicle that smith would start for let's say all but 4 teams. It's one o clock for me rn and I don't wanna think of all the teams wrs but the broncos come to mind for a team that would start him. Depending in if they can keep their wrs of course

I'm assuming that's bc people consider him a free agent rn. If a 15 sack de isn't starting on every team except the texans( if they draft clowney) then something is seriously screwed up

I could see saying that Tolbert would start on any team that uses a true fullback.

If it's a team that just uses a stable of runningbacks though, then it's less certain.

There is nothing less certain about Tolbert. Yes he can start on any team that uses a Fullback. But I will let it be known that he will get his touches at RB as well, regardless of what stable you speak of on any team. Any team that does not put this guy in the backfield as a RB on short yardage conversions, which happens too many times to count, you are thus under utilizing the guy and should not have the opportunity to have him`

There was a time when the teams with the most money could just buy all the best players.  Thankfully, the salary cap put an end to that.  And now, every team has to put some serious effort into roster management (with some obviously being better at it than others).

It's generally been shown that you can't reach the pinnacle of success building a team with a single superstar surrounded by a bunch of scrubs (you could argue that was the Colts formula for several years).  To be consistently successful, you need to have great players scattered all around the roster, and generally at the right positions.

So with that in mind, two questions...

One: What positions do you think are the absolute most important to have star players in (limit four, though i could accept five)

Two: How many players do the Panthers have that could be considered truly "great players", with "great" being defined as someone who could start at his position for almost any team in the league?

And by all means, feel free to name names.

That's not how I remember it. Marvin Harrison, Reggie Wayne, Pierre Garcon, Edgerin James, Mathis, I can keep going. Don't remember that Colts team you described. You're would have been better without that statement.

    • Trade up for a project was dumb, he's gonna be 25 next month. By the time you're deciding on whether he's worth the 5th year option or a big contract you're already gonna be thinking about moving on soon either way.
    • I mean this is legit AF statement....you don't spend that draft capital on a project just like you don't trade up for an injured RB either, which was done in the same draft.  That draft IMO was a necessary evil for DM to learn from his mistakes (I think he did but some may not). Also I have to mention I'm a big Coker fan and think getting him as an UDFA was obv a steal.  Coker is the better WR2 at this point as Legette and its not even debatable unfortunately.  Give him year 3 but don't expect much from him.  Continue in the offseason with adding as much talent and competition on the roster as possible including WR.  Or just trade his ass for peanuts and continue to build roster by any means.......
    • Losing him was a huge loss. Look at how the Bears went from a 5 win team to now a 11 win team. The Lions offensive line is bad this year, secondary is bad and Campbell going for it on 4th down all the time has cost them games instead of taking the Field Goals. Goff is inconsistent as well.
