Joel Corry says franchising Hardy would eat up all of our cap space

someone more twitter savvy will have to post the link but its on twitter.

The exact quote was "Franchising Greg Hardy at 12.82M would eat up all of Carolina's cap room"

Just an fyi this guy seems to be in the know on the cap more than most out there.

His background is as former sports agent and now currently a writer for cbs sports and the national football post on salary cap related issues.

And yes he said this after the news of the cap going up to 130 million.

We have $11.9M now with the 130 ceiling. This guy is a former NFL agent and is a constant source for information around the league. He's a numbers guy so most of his information is cap related. He was recently on ross tucker's podcast (good episode that shows his knowledge and background) and has a clear understanding of the cap. I'd take his work on any cap related topic.

tagging hardy would be a mistake unless we were sure we would be able to either trade him to another team or sign him to a more cap friendly deal....but the truth is, the amount he'd get paid a year would probably sit right around where they tag $ is so we'd likely still be in the same situation.

I'm pretty sure you can rescind the franchise tag at any point. If that's the case then we could tag him, try to extend him or find a trade partner and if nothing works out rescind the tag and let him hit free agency. We're not going to be players in the first wave of free agency where guys are getting massively overpaid anyway.

Yeh so even with the extra money we tag hardy and have about $2mil left over for cam and 20 free agents oh and this years draft class! Dream on people, even with restructuring contracts there is no way possible hardy is a panther next season not unless you only want a 30 man roster

He is right that franchising him would eat up too much cap but that is not nearly the complete story here.  First off I hear numbers that range from we have 13 million to 28 million.  It would be nice to be just a little more precise.  Plus we will only franchise him in order to work out a long term deal or trade him.  We are not going to be looking at a 13 million dollar cap hit.  If we sign him long term that cap hit goes down to something in the 5-7 million range in 2014.  That is more than doable given the increase in cap from last year.  The cap will go up significantly the next 2 years and with the dead money gone, we can do whatever we need to do.

On the other hand I don't know that Gettleman is that intent on keeping Hardy if he felt this would send a bad message to other players that we will pay a ton for one player.

What's the dead money projected for next offseason? They can half CJ contract surely this year and just change it from guaranteed to bonus money that way it halfs his cap hit alone?

Can't really project that until all the cuts are made.  You could restructure Johnson and save some money but 9,000,000 of his 16 million cap hit is salary not signing bonus.

I know it is heresy but if you cut Johnson you could make him a June 1st designation and save 8 million in cap space this year and 9 million next year.  Honestly I would take Hardy over Johnson at this point given the money saving and recent production.

Yeah I know this will piss off tons of folks but his cap hit is approaching Peppers money.  This year it is 16 million and next year it is over 17 million.  He simply isn't worth that.
