Steve Smith on Gettleman's "Evaluation" comment

Johnny Rockets

Betraying the most loyal player of this team is unaceptable, and the Big cat must take full responabilitiy he can't hide behind his GM or coach..

I know some wanabe fans doesn't care much about a player or another only the result matter.

For me a team is much more than a group of guys wining a championship, you must win the proper way, with the proper guys.

We have shared 12 years!!! 12 years of football, 12 years of good moments.

And by the way, Smitty is still our most reliable WR, so before destroying what is left of the passing game find solutions.

Also, Ricky Proehl played up to? 38? 39?

I wonder though if these comments will inspire Smitty to have his best season yet.  Finally get that 2,000 yard season hehe.  Of course I don't necessarily understand why Rivera and Gettleman even said anything in regards to him being a Panther.  I don't know the context, I admit I haven't fully read the comments or looked at the video if there's video, but it would be weird if a reporter was asking whether or not Smith would be here next year.  I agree they should have talked with him personally if there was any evaluation going on.  The only thing I can think of, all of this was about trying to motivate Smitty in some way.  If that was the case, I don't necessarily agree with it, but they know him better than any of us do.

To be fair, Ricky Proehl was a different type of receiver than Smitty and much, much cheaper. I love Smitty and absolutely want him to stay but the business side can't be ignored, though I do think he has earned some kind of premium beyond just his stats for his commitment and intangibles.

Guest Dark Knight

He should be the grim reaper to the players. Nobody should feel entitled. It works for New England.

They haven't won a Super Bowl in a freaking decade.

People always talk about New England cycling through players & keep on winning. But do they really? They won 3 Super Bowls with a group of guys then started tinkering with their roster due to cap issues. And they haven't won since.

True. However, the Patriots have been a perennial play off team, and have won the AFC East pretty much every season since that last Super Bowl victory. When people talk about the Patriots winning, they mean they are yearly super bowl contenders and have been for a decade plus. That type of consistency is hard to create, and it is what this team desires to create (obviously with a super bowl included).

Smith's on the field production is not worth the salary that he is bring paid... It is that simple.

I would prefer to use that space to sign a younger FA WR.

I think he is worth it. One down season no biggie. It was not just him so I see no reason for alarm or putting him out to pasture.

When his role is decided , obviously moving to the slot, he will move back up again stat wise. He has 2 -3 good years left. Now if he decides to retire that is his call. He is still the best receiver we have and will be the best receiver we have after the draft or Free agency. He may restructure or he may not but either way he will not be cut.So no matter how many reasons you have none will be used to cut him.

" we know what we want to do." = we want Steve Smith to play for the Panthers. no other way to read what he said except he is in our plans to play for the Panthers.

Ya i understand what your saying. He has been such a great player for us. The reality is he is just going to get older and his performance will drop further. You cant leave him out there at 37 getting 600 yds a season and pay him #1 money. There comes a point in time when you have to say the cost is not worth what he is putting on the field.

Now I still think Steve has enough gas in the tank for 1 or 2 years but it is very hard to pay him 7 and 9 mil when that money could be used for something better.

2 years sounds about right . There may come a time when you can say the cost is not worth it but to judge it on this one season is not that time.He looked dead in the water in 2010 and came back strong. I wouldn't call this season a trend yet .

As hard-headed and stupid as it might sound, Smitty is just off limits to me. You obviously cannot overpay for him as it cripples the rest of the team, but my emotional connection to him as the greatest Panther of all time just won't allow me to condone this treatment. I know, I know, that's why I'm not a GM. I get that. He's got a tough job. Just give respect where it has been earned.

    • Yeah, I could jump right into the unbelievable Bryce debate now that some people are trying to flip the script because Bryce Young has, at most, a handful of decent games as a pro, but that's going to work itself out. Suffice it to say that I've seen better QBs (with an s) in a Panthers uniform, and I've certainly seen better QBs be drafted while we're playing around with Bryce, one of them who beat the crap out of us already this season... Let's forget about Bryce (and his markedly underwhelming play since he's been here); I think that most sane fans will agree that drafting him was an error, but it happens. Sure, it doesn't happen to the tune of King's ransom---including your main receiver---but it happens. You bet, you lose. Speaking of receivers...and betting and losing... Oh, man, we drafted Xavier Legette. Yes, just like with Bryce, I've entered "the dark side." Some Huddlers were telling us from the beginning, and they were right. But, I'm not apologizing for waiting to see what a guy's got before making my decision on him. X was a one-year wonder at South Carolina who parlayed some really nice production that season, a great personality and thick country accent, into becoming a first round pick (but only in Carolina). For Dan Morgan and company, He was a big swing that has turned into a big whiff (and I can still feel the ill breeze from that one). Sh¡t happens, right? Well, not so fast. Ladd McConkey was the decidedly more polished receiver who was literally ready to hit the ground running as soon as stepping onto the field as a pro. Ladd was never the biggest guy (though not the smallest), but he was the guy that could run routes, always seemed to get open---no question---and had the same speed as X, but with legit quickness and nuanced shake and bake. But Dan chose the project. He chose the guy where the game speed looks more like a tractor trailer than a 5.0 mustang. Look, I've supported X (just like Bryce) many many a day, but no more. Now I'm not saying that I won't root for the guy. Just like with Bryce, he seems like a great kid. But as far as giving excuses for the kid, and, perhaps more importantly, waiting for some miraculous breakout, I'm done with that. I've seen enough. You don't draft a project for a project. And yes, Bryce had proven to be a project after his first season. In my mind, drafting a supposedly number one receiver that needs lots of development for a starting quarterback that needs immediate help to try and further his development is not going to lead to good things. Pick the surest guy. Or at least pick the one who appears to be the surest guy, because picking can be tricky... especially when you're too busy tricking yourself.
    • Winning ain't gonna make my eyes lie to me. Context matters, and it will always matter in the game of football.
    • That TD pass to Legette against Miami. Elite. The play where Bryce rolls right to buy time until Tet can reverse field.  Bryce pumps as multiple defenders close in.  He barely gets it away before he takes a big time hit.  Beautiful off platform throw and great catch by Tet.   The second TD to Tet against Dallas where Bryce dips and turns his shoulder in to evade the pass rusher.  Resets and finds Tet in the end zone. Dude embodies the Keep Pounding mantra.
