Question time

To those who question Steve Smith's value to this team:

How many games do you think the Panthers would have won last year without Steve Smith?

Well we won both games without him.  The only games they lost were the games that he got injured/ re injured.  One of the games that we lost was against the Saints in the Superdome, and then we turned around and beat them two weeks later without Smith....just saying.

$9ers would have been tough to beat that day with or without Smith.

We won a game against the Saints outdoors in the rain and against a 4-12 Falcons team without him... your point? Would we have won the San Francisco, Miami, or New England games without him?

Smitty is no longer or should no longer be valued by how many yards or TD's he makes but by how he impacts the rest of the team.  After loosing Gross already im concerned about the leadership and fire.  To lose both would/could be a huge blow to the mental and emotional makeup of this team.

What would the NFL look like if there were no salary cap?  Which team would be the Yankees?  Which team would be the Mariners?

Steve Smith missed most of the Saints game, but still nearly lead the team in receiving. For the Falcons game, Deangelo Williams lead the team in receiving, Brandon Lafell had zero yards, Ginn had 6 yards on two receptions, Greg Olsen had 42 yards, and the lone TD.

As for the 49ers playoff game, Steve Smith had the only touchdown.

Fact of the matter is, we are a better team with Steve Smith than without him. If you replace him, it should be for an upgrade.

The people casually tossing around the idea of cutting Steve Smith are in for a rude awakening. It's easy to talk tough in the offseason.

Wow....way to undermine the Saints.  I don't like them either, but they threw everything they had at us that game....and I'm pretty sure we won on a game winning drive that culminated in a touchdown catch in the endzone against a top 5 defense. Granted we only put up 21 against the falcons but we hung 30 on the jets......so sorry I made a mistake...we went 3-0 without Smitty.

Against the Patriots....Smitty didn't necessarily have a bad game but he only had 4 catches for 62 yards.  Decent but not transcendent and not irreplaceable.

He had a decent showing in the 49ers playoff game in the first half....before he bowed out in the second half.  But when we beat them the first we only scored 10 points (he did have 6 catches in that game) in the victory against them and only 6 against the Cardinals where he only had 4 catches.

Conversely in our most complete team performance against the Giants a 38-0 shutout....Smith only had 3 catches for 40 yards with 0 touchdowns.  He only had 4 catches for 42 yards with 0 tds in our 31-13 mauling of the Bucs.

So even in our best offensive games he wasn't even close to our biggest offensive weapon.

I'm not downing him.....just saying we can win without him.

    • No one's saying LaMelo has no blame we're responding to you acting like he's the reason they lost. The scapegoating and blaming the teams woes on his personality is where it's like Cam Newton all over again. It was a failure on multiple fronts and primarily Lee's. Dude said ON AIR pregame that they had to protect the paint and if that was his gameplan going in he couldn't have botched it more. As the commentators said Ball's a rhythm guy and Orlando was preventing him for getting any kind of flow going. I'm a normie watching on TV and said they needed to bait them into fouling to combat that. They didn't even try until the 2nd half when it was too late. I think it's fair to expect the star to overcome whatever but LaMelo was not the problem in that game and he's not what is holding the team back. He's the only reason they're flirting with being a great team. I kinda put the center play on Lee too. Moose is great until he's up against a big who can body him. We've always known that and that's what Kalkbrenner is for. I don't know if it would have changed much but Kalkbrenner should have had more minutes than him.  And moving forward with the center position, I just think it's the time to trade Diabate while his stock's high and that's not an indictment of his game. He's like an evolved combination of Biyombo and PJ. He's a great rim protector and the strength issue is just what you're going to have to deal with if you want that. But Kalkbrenner is perfectly capable of protecting the rim and we gotta get away from the undersized centers or it'll always be a problem for us.
    • Honestly its why that Jalen Coker grab was a big deal.  I'd been warming up to the idea of a sadiq pick and was adamantly against a receiver...but this altered my train of thought.  I mean For instance, Cade Otton signed for 3 yr 30 mil contract...thats not dramatically different than the rookie payscale for #19 (4 year 20 mil with 5th year option), however you KNOW otton is decent...no clue if Sadiq will be anything.
