Gettleman used the only option he had with Hardy. He bought some time and now its up to Hardy to see if he stays on a long term deal, is traded to another team, or just walks like Peppers. You can't get too close to one player if your Gettleman. Its a team game and he has to put the interest of the team first. He will make the best decision for the team and not for Hardy or Smitty. Smitty is the best WR we ever had and I would hate to see him leave, but again whatever is best for the team. I hated to see Delhome leave but it was best at the time.

The wisdom of this move is lost in the numbers and the writer's inability to analyze all possible future scenarios.  For example, what if Hardy has 9 sacks in 2014?  What if CJ restructures his deal?  Smitty drops about $3 million off his cap figure?  I think there is about $10m to be found by looking into those situations.

 

The OL concerns me.  When I read articles about Bell playing LT because he is left handed, I get very concerned.

where are either of these players incentives to restructure? there isnt one, only way they might be able to do it with Smith would be to bascially guarantee his contract and drop the figure by a bit but even then do you really want to do that?

Kalil just restructured for the second year in a row-it happens a lot.  It is not a disadvantage for a player to restructure--just more guaranteed money in most cases to players who are pretty certain to perform.

 

Long term, the Panthers save a lot by cutting Smitty--and Smitty stands to lose a lot by not agreeing to a new deal. 

 

There is an article by Over the Cap . com that addresses all of your concerns. It gives many reasons it would be in Smitty's best interest to restructure.  It also suggests that he doesn't have to, but if he doesn't, there is (another source-Bill Voth twitter) about a 70% chance he won't be here in 2014).  No flowers, just commonly accepted projections.

Yes I agree, I do have faith gettlemans ability to spot talent more so than his ability as a gm at this point, as was mentioned we did have 6 rookies outhere on defence at some point and in big games, I'm hoping we snag a few more good draft pickups and udfa this year, king and mcnutt are basically like kugbila unknown and untested but they are basically three 2013 draft picks that will be on this years roster actually playing games! looking at free agency I don't think we need to make huge splashes anyway, I would just like a good LT like anthony collins, bring mitchell back and maybe another safety to play with him, a veteran corner to compliment melvin white who I'm happy give a shot gain this year, he will be better for his rookie season last year.

We can maybe draft two receivers to go along with mcnutt,king and smitty, there are guys like those I've mentioned and others like brandon williams, travis bond that will replace some of the free agents lost like piggy, dockery and others, we are going to have a much younger and new team this year and we will have to expect some growing pains, but longterm we are being moulded slowly into a totally new team.

      Yeah if we are spending anywhere I hope it is OT.  I think our secondary will look similar to what it did last year plus a mid  FA and a couple rookies to compete. I think he is doing well with the hand he was dealt, fielding the best team that he can while trying to fix the cap for the long run.

With our cap situation after tagging Hardy its about the best we can do. Defence will stay the same and the offence is going to take 10 steps back. I really will be supprised if we can muster 10 points a game with how bad our line is.

Right now, it sure looks bleak. 

I think we are $8.5 under the cap and there is the possibility of creating another $4-6 million (that is a guess). If we lock up Hardy on a long-term deal, that number could go up to about $10m (another guess).  Let's say we have $14 million going into free agency.  What do we really need?  OT, CB, S, WR..  If we used all of the remaining cap room on a T, S, and CB, that would be fine with me.  We can draft another OL, WR, WR, and CB.  We would be young as heck at WR, but there is some major talent at that position in this year's draft. 

 

Before someone adds that we have to sign our draft picks, I thought we could use money saved on June 1 cuts to do that.
