For people who are angry with Dave Gettleman..

Look man it's not about just letting go of Steve. That I can totally understand. It's how it all went down that has people pissed at Gettleman.

All he said was that everyone was being evaluated. Some if you still think certain players should be hands off.

Do we know for sure that Steve was offered the option to take less money??

You never know for a fact but you gotta think it is the logical choice. The panthers would have no problem paying 2-4 mil a year. We need help at WR and he has been our WR for a long time.

I mean honestly if steve went up to dave and said I want to finish my career here and I don't care about the money. Do you think Dave would say no?

The problem is Steve's contract. You fix that where he is making closer to 3-4 mil and you will have no problems and he continues to be a panther.

I totally agree that that seems like the logical choice..

But I also think it's weird that Steve wouldn't be on board for that.. So it makes me wonder if he had the option.  I mean, supposedly, they weren't talking at all until Steve decided to schedule a meeting.  Players don't schedule meetings to discuss lowering their salaries..  If we were gonna ask him to do that, wouldn't we have scheduled a meeting and done it sooner?

Well here is the thing about Steve. He has alot of great qualities but he also had his bad ones. Watching him for the past 10 years and all the things he said and did on and off the field, he always struck me as a guy that is "Me first kinda guy" which you cant really blame him because alot of people are like that. I could totally see a situation where his pride/emotions gets in the way of a paycut. Heck the only guy that I remember ever taking a legit paycut was Gross. That man was something else he was totally a team first kinda guy.

I'm not really surprised that all the moves came late. Dave is the kinda of person that sets up all the dominios in perfect position before knocking them down. He had to handle the most important things first like finding a way to keep Hardy and resigning Gano. Now he has to find ways to clear money to bring in free agents and sign the draft class. The steve smith situation was going to happen eventually but it wasn't really a priority because more important things had to be done first.

Keep in mind too Dave not only had to evaluate all the players and contracts by watching all the film. He also has to evaluate talent in the upcoming draft. Steve can be cut anytime before his option bonus which is June I believe.

The things that comes before that are more important. Resigning our guys before they hit free agency, talking to free agents, trying to get done deals with the free agents, evaluating the draft class. Steve Smith is pretty far back on the to do list if you ask me because the deadline for that decision is much further away compared to the draft and free agency

Honestly, I am more ticked off at steve than dave. The panthers have paid Steve very well in the past 10 years. They were super loyal to him and treated him extremely well considering some off the field issues and trade demands.

Now after 10+ years of the panthers feeding him very well, Steve has a chance to help out the panthers by taking a pay cut. What disappoints me is he would rather get cut and collect guaranteed money than rework his deal to play out his final 1-2 years with this organization. Gross did it why can't Smith

Why should a player take a pay cut for loyalty when the team has made it clear that they only care about business?

My point was that you don't know if he was given the option to take a pay cut.  You are just speculating based off of perceptions you have of Steve.

From what has been reported, it seems like he wasn't, but i really have no idea.  It seems weird that Steve had to schedule his own meeting, if they had planned on giving him that offer.
