For people who are angry with Dave Gettleman..

Have you taken the time to think that Dave Gettleman may not have been been the only one who thought it was time to let Smitty go? Don't you wonder what kind of input he got from Ron, Shula, etc.? I wonder what they were saying during all of the discussions.

Gettleman claims he is good at listening to others and not just doing things his way, which he backed up by keeping a lot of coaches and scouts here. So I have to believe that there are a good number of people who are on board with this and share a vision for what they want.

As for how he handled the situation.. The media probably made it seem much worse than it really was. Smitty is the best panther of all time so anyway we got rid of him would have turned into a drama story.

Honestly, I am more ticked off at steve than dave. The panthers have paid Steve very well in the past 10 years. They were super loyal to him and treated him extremely well considering some off the field issues and trade demands.

Now after 10+ years of the panthers feeding him very well, Steve has a chance to help out the panthers by taking a pay cut. What disappoints me is he would rather get cut and collect guaranteed money than rework his deal to play out his final 1-2 years with this organization. Gross did it why can't Smith

Not even sure if Smitty is going and we have lots of data points to gather in the next 5 months

I'll be mad at Gettleman if we go 8-8 next year

if we go .500 next year, it will be the sudden demise of the OLine which is more at fault

I guarantee you if G-man had his mind made up about this situation and asked Rivera for his input and Ron said 'we NEED to keep him,' G-man would've done it anyways if he thought it was best for the franchise. I just don't believe he's right in believing that it's the best move for the franchise going forward. We'll see in time, but as of right now I'm very upset. This is along the lines of trading 3 first rounders to move up in the first or some ridiculous Hurney crap like that, in my opinion. I trust Gettleman as he's who was hired to be the GM, but I'm not happy about this decision if it becomes true.

For the people who are mad at gettleman. Stop just looking at this season. Smitty is set to rake up a lot more money in the next two seasons after this one. Yeah, its only 7m now, but smitty a year older from now will make 13m and then 15 m a year after that. We gotta cut the cord now so we don't have to deal with dead money next few seasons. Long term folks.

We aren't upset with the decisions he's making as much as how he's going about making them. You can be a businessman and not be a prick. That type of thing has a ripple affect with your roster.

Do you know what meetings, conversations, etc happened in this situation? I thought not.

I'm not angry at all but I sure hope he knows what he's doing. I have to admit I am pretty nervous due to the fact that the secondary, o line, and receivers are pretty much gutted. Couple that with the panthers being cap strapped and it's enough to raise a few eyebrows. Hopefully fa and the Draft are kind to us!!

Do we know for sure that Steve was offered the option to take less money??

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
