Draft day shocker - prediction

CRA

Also, I said last year as everyone championed DG as the greatest thing since sliced bread......we don't even know him yet. Let's let the man earn his praise. Said last offseason that this offseason would tell is much much more about the man than last.

And that still, is not a DG bash. Just like it wasn't last offseason. Since he arrived he left enough clues that he was going to be different than what we were accustomed to.

people keep talking about BPA. i have a few questions for you all... first, according to what school of thought will Gman pick his "BPA"? Next, who's to say the player you or the media or scouts say is the "BPA" is the BPA according to Gman? put a different way, how do you know your opinion on BPA is the same as Gman's opinion? and finally, has anyone thought that maybe Gman's opinion on BPA is that the BPA is whoever our team needs most at that point in the draft?

all this BPA talk makes my head hurt. no one knows how healthy a player will stay or how well he will perform or how well he'll fit in the scheme. the only people who have any idea are the people we have no control over anyway - the Panthers' FO.

My point on BPA ultimately is......that BPA is different depending who you are.

Every team also says they will draft best player

Don't expect him to draft specifically for need. He will weight WR and OL a little higher than other positions, but if guys from other positions fall to them he will take those players and fill in the holes after the draft through FA

Yea the truth is we do not know how he defines the BPA as it relates to our draft board. Obviously when you have Luke,Cam and Star those positions are probably taken off our draft board. I am sure position of need weighs into the equation.

and the best player is different for every team (basically). in other words... we agree. at least... you and i do. some other posts ive seen here on the Huddle make it seem like BPA is a universal opinion among NFL GMs and that they are all clamoring for the same small group of players. reality is much more broad than that.

interesting thought though... as i played with Fanspeak's draft simulator, time and time again Eric Ebron was left as the BPA (using all three schools of thought). if the miraculous happens and Ebron is still sitting on the board when we pick at 28, i say we take him. Cammypoo likes his short-intermediate passes and Olsen was our leading reciever last season. do what works. haha. im all for going to a 2TE set. more/better blockers when Cam decides to take off runnin

Usually a team will have their big board, and grade every draftable player.  I do believe some if not most teams will weigh need in with their grade.  So certain WRs may have higher grades in WR need teams than teams that are set at WR.

However, if there is a guy that plays a position that is not considered a need, but he slides significantly to the point that a player plays a position that the team is not in need of, has too much value to pass on, then you pick him.

It isn't as much about BPA or need as it is value.

If someone posted DG's last draft the day before the draft....no one would have believed it. No one would have believed DT, DT, G, LB, RB.

No one would have believed his first real offseason to date either.

Now, I am not saying his choices are wrong but I do think he continues keeping the fanbase off.

I think DG will draft a DE and maybe a another RB. DG seems to extremely focused on the cap and long term winning. DE is spot he will need leverage and options and you find your RBs in the draft.

I think first round is a T. With him adding a 3 rd roundish WR.

That isn't what I want but my guess on how things play out

I fully expect DG not to draft a WR till the 3rd. Doesn't mean I'm not going to be extremely pissed off when it happens.

Reading the quote from Jonathon Jones Q&A awhile ago, it really does read like he's against taking WR's high

A lot depends on how Gettleman thinks the Hardy deal will work out. He is under a franchise tag this year. Next year we will be dealing with Cam's contract, so if Hardy demands a huge contract we will need a DE either this year or next.

so would that value be used to trade for some position that IS a need? im sorry but i was a GM, need would be my highest priority

No. It means would you rather have a good football player at any given position or an average to bad football player just because you have a need?
