Cam Newton: “I have to take more ownership of this offense and I will."

Steve smith was a cheap excuse..

You don't become a leader by eliminating the strong egos, they must be convinced.

This is the difference between a leader and a shepherd..

A leader will lead both the sheeps and the wolves.

I think cam was just waiting his turn.   also, cam did it out of respect for smitty, the org and fans.   i think the front office new this all along and cut ties at the right moment.  we all wanted a proper sendoff to smitty

Get Newton a line that gives him time like that, and I think we can wait a year to go after a 'gamebreaker'.

this is why i havent been so down on the replacements for Smith, LaFell, and Ginn. a great QB and a great OL can make put mediocre receivers in the Pro Bowl. i do want Gettleman and Co. to draft at least 1 WR in this draft, but i would much rather have 3 OTs, a G, and only 1 WR than a bunch of WRs and only 1 or 2 OT and no G. the second scenario is what most pundits and uneducated fans seem to want... "CAM NEEDS RECEIVERS!!!! CAM NEEDS WEAPONS!!! wait... what is an offensive line? meh... doesnt matter. all our problems would be solved if Cam had some legit weapons"

perfect draft IMO: 2 OT, combo OT/G or combo G/C, 1 legit WR, 1 legit CB, 1 LB, 1 DE

The OL has been gradually becoming a problem for the past few seasons, it's not a secret. We also knew that Gross was very likely heading into his final season last year. Our drafting of contributors to the offensive side of the ball since 2011 has been very inadequate to put it nicely.

As for the WR's, the main goal should be to improve on the position first and foremost, not just settle for "replacing" those previous players. We do not have a clear #1 receiver, and I don't care what generic statements Gettleman or Rivera give before the draft, they want one.

Very possible.  Sometimes you get two ultra-competitive, alpha male types on the same project, you expect it to go well but they don't completely click quite like you'd hope.

I've been waiting for Newton to have his 'takeover' moment when he placed himself firmly in charge.  For Delhomme that occurred on his first drive in the Jacksonville game.  Jake came in, took charge of the huddle and led them down the field for a score.  From that point on, the team would have followed him through the gates of Hell.

There have been a couple of moments where I thought that might happen for Cam, but till now I sill haven't really felt it.  And it may indeed be that Steve's presence made that difficult.

I guess we'll see what happens this season.

So basically, if Cam ballz out, Smitty is a hindrance. If Cam struggles, oopsy

Now...it's almost like Cam and Gman are starting a new era. Time for Cam to take over and make this "His" team. And I hope they give him more help in this aspect than they seem to want to do in regards to weapons. Things like giving Cam someone besides a player to talk to, making sure he is involved in game planning, as well as any new news, he has to be in the loop. If the guys are going to look to him for answers, it may behoove the Panthers to make sure he gets all the answers he needs.

Anywho...Gooooooooo Cats!!!!!!!!!!!!

It is kinda funny with Cam. He could be a rah rah type guy, and lead by example along the way. But, it was still sorta Smitty's team. Like letting big brother deal with the heavy stuff, and Cam gets all the lighter stuff. Cool deal.

Also like to add, this past season I think we saw the beginning of a great QB growing into a leader.  This year I expect him to cross into the upper echelon, if not then get very close.  As long as he keeps working and keeps his mindset and spirit strong the best is yet to come for us.  His freak raw athleticism combined with knowledge and competitiveness will lift this team to new heights.

Rumble young man, rumble.

Run you clever boy, run.

i agree with this statement. like i said, we need to draft at least one WR. but the ONLY way i see us taking only one WR is if that one WR is a legit #1 in the making. if we land a guy early who the FO isnt sure about, i see us drafting another later on.

in other words... if we land Brandin Cooks, Davante Adams, or someone similar... i wont expect us to draft another WR. if we draft someone like Moncrief or Landry early, i will expect us to take someone like Devin Street or Bruce Ellington later...

Other than the Smitty thingy, I don't see how we could have afforded to do much different than we did. No money. Throw in we have a plethora of young WRs we want to look at. And Voila! We present to you, for your enjoyment and pleasure, a WR corp. that scares few.

Best case, we draft two talented WRs that can grow, and push, each other for years. Throw in a starting caliber LT, and 1-2 more contributors. And we are just as good as last year. With room for growth as well.

Worse case, for some oddball reason Gman totally fugs up the draft. And things just never quite gel. We should still be competitive. But our WR corp. could hold us back.

I like the former. I have no reason to think that Gman cannot repeat his draft prowess. If so, we should be a pretty good team, with the potential to be dangerous.

For right now, I'd settle for a quality contributor at the position, and there is plenty of talent in this years draft for us to find one.

what about john ramsdell - senior offensive assistant?

I mentioned him a few posts later.

I wouldn't mind two WR's, but I have a feeling that if Gettleman decides to double dip, it will be on the OL.

Yeah, I'm the one pitching 2WR in the first 3 rounds. Yet have said many times we have a bunch of young WR we really need to take a look at. I can't have it both ways. So...I go with a 1st round WR, and let the kids fight it out for those last 2 spots.
