One of my worries with Canales is that he mght have a little of Ron Rivera's "let them go out on their own terms" attitude. Depth chart management was always one of Rivera's weaknesses.

Look for the best ILB who has a proven track record of running the defense on the field. High leadership and football IQ marks, good tackler, looks to correct mistakes being made in-play. Needs to be the brains more than the brawn. Luke was always the brains, TD the enforcer and Shaq the chaser. Worked like a charm. Dan Morgan should know how to build this, but seemingly can't. I think he is easily sold on players by their agents more than what they actually bring to the field. But what do I know?

A pick like that would allow you to package it to move up for a player. Say someone in the 2nd you really like slips into the third but you know won’t last and you are picking 12th in the round. There you go, give your third and a later pick and get your guy. Currency is currency. I don’t think this is happening though; anyone that wants to trade for a RB will want Rico. Of course you could use Chuba to leverage more for Rico. Say no way you are trading him but we’ll trade Chuba. Make them talk you into trading Rico.

This. We should hopefully learn our lesson. If we somehow ship Chuba, by no means does that translate to signing Rico to a multi-year deal. Unless we want to find ourselves in the same spot again -- i.e. Brooks looks great in 26' and Rico comes down to earth after we pay him at the cliff age of 28.

There are times I could swear some of our fans like trading more than they do winning. It seems especially crazy that right as some of our young players are just starting to hit their stride, it's almost guaranteed some yahoo is gonna start shouting "trade him!"

If we're talking exclusively 3-down ILBs, Allen (UGA), Weeks (LSU), & Lawson (Bama) are all going to be prime candidates for us. Finding a vocal, sideline-to-sideline, technically proficient man in the middle is what we need immensely.
