Canales update. Mayes is out. Wallace continuing out
Murph replied to raleigh-panther's topic in Carolina Panthers
With Mays and Corbett UFAs, Center is a huge need. May might get re-signed on a multi-year extension. It wouldn’t break the bank and Bryce works well with him. -

So do we think center is a need going into the draft next season yet? -
They’re not even competitive against awful teams. The defense is absolutely awful.
-
I get it but after brooks we couldn't roll on another injury prone dude.
-
I think he's trending upwards but yeah I can see him mostly being a second stringer. We definitely need LB upgrades heh. But I do understand why they devoted so much to the offense. Hopefully next draft continues to shift / at least keep things balanced. We should be in good position to grab a strong player for our defense
-
I dont think Bryce is the answer either. Its just interesting that the people who always knocked any good Bryce metrics as metrics dont matter are the ones now pushing some of the least black and white metrics in dvoa.

They are smart enough to take advantage. Not sure why other teams haven’t really focused on that. -

Christian will have a field day catching passes out of backfield - Today

Kon with 6 three pointers tonight. The rest of the team is 2-20 from behind the arch. The shooting is HORRENDOUS. And these boys are getting sonned by a 36 year old James Harden on defense. At this point I think beyond moving on from certain players Charles Lee is no longer beyond criticism. This is pitiful. If he can't do better than this then he needs to go too.
-
Definitely hoping for a LB upgrade program. Attack it with the same intensity as they have the other projects. We needed so much after years of serious defensive neglect. It took years to make it what it was it will take years to bring it up.
-
Yeah, I don’t disagree. He just doesn’t come across as a guy who would be happy as a 2nd option in a run first offense with an inconsistent QB. Gives off diva WR vibes. Plus, I feel like his best days are behind him. We need to use that hypothetical money on re-signing Ickey and whatever position of need we don’t address in the draft. (FS, MLB, Edge, OL depth)
-
Hey if they finish 2nd in the division and get that second place schedule next year, might be some regression from the already below average. God forbid they play a 1st place schedule next year lol. It will be a fun few weeks here if that happens but man we will pay for it big time.
-
Yeah, possibly so. They still have to overhaul the DL too. We only have two quality starters in Robinson and Brown. The rest of that entire unit are second and third string guys.
-
I suspect this off season will be when they attack the LBs and DBs. They seem to be focusing each off season on one or two areas to overhaul. I honestly think it's been relatively successful. It's just a slow process.
-
That draft might be best off just forgotten. Let’s hope they can repeat or at least come close to repeating this year’s draft. Difference being less urgency to help the QB than in 2024, and both Canales and Morgan have been in place for the whole year again and that that was a factor in last year’s improved results. Early results anyway.
-
Somewhat more detail, or perspective. Lavar Arrington talked about it today on his radio show. The number he was repeating was 26 million, and this has all come about due to missed team meetings and activities. He was not aware how the team could take guaranteed money away. TJ Houshmandzadeh, a co-host on the show, said teams absolutely can if they can show a player is not meeting their contractual obligations. Plaxico Burress, the other co-host, couldn't understand why he wouldn't fight for the money, that he just didn't care about 26 million, and it didn't make much sense. All 3 said they would happily go sit in meetings for him and be great tutors for 26 million. They also predicted this was a precursor to cutting him, and him going straight to the Commanders to play with Daniels. FWIW, 3 former players, but none had any particularly special or privileged insight into the situation.
-
He's just a backup caliber player. Nothing wrong with that. I'd love to have him as a second stringer. Maybe one day our FO will agree that the LB corps is due a big upgrade.
-
Yeah another outlet talking about regression and how overall the panthers passing offense is anemic Though the Panthers’ pass game went berserk in Week 11 against a Falcons defense that has apparently given up on the 2025 season, they didn’t produce a ton of air yards. Their 293 air yards ranks 12th on the week. It was well above their season average but likely more an illusion than a sign of things to come. Carolina has the league’s second lowest pass rate over expected this season. Since Week 5 they are a rather stunning nine percent below their expected pass rate, by far the lowest in the NFL. I don’t think any Carolina pass catchers are reliable outside of Tetairoa McMillan. I’m probably not breaking any news there. https://www.nbcsports.com/fantasy/football/news/bryce-young-chris-olave-chase-brown-headline-week-12s-regression-files

I would bet they pushed the ankle hard and it wasn’t happy the next day. -
49ers 38 Panthers 10 I have a significant amount of hatred for the 49ers but they are immensely more talented(even though they are banged up), the gulf between the coaching staff quality is one of the largest imaginable and they will be at home. I think this is just one of those bad matchups for us. If we can't ball control early and force TO's, this is gonna get out of hand quickly.
-
Putting aside rather having him than Wallace ( I don't disagree ), I think the last few weeks before his injury it looked like Wallace was starting to put it together. He was getting TFLs, sacks, PDs, etc. I don't think he will ever be a star for us, though.

Mayes being out is brutal. That's a downgrade at OC and a downgrade at OG in one move. The LB's being out is completely irrelevant. Wallace and Rozeboom are both terrible. If anything, let some of these other bums get some reps. -
100%. I wish we had gotten one of those high level MLB's in the 2nd or 3rd. Oh well, the draft results don't look too awful so far. They do seem to have him on a snap count of sorts. Not sure if that is intentional or just that he isn't a starter. TBH, in hindsight I would have much rather gambled on him than Wallace. Wallace appears to be quickly descending towards being a special teams guy, while at least Wilson can play at a high level for spurts of time. Even if he got injured in his rookie deal, probably would end up better off than we have with Wallace.
-
Maybe. They have the worst pass rush in the league
