Round 3 - The Carolina Panthers Select DJ Johnson - EDGE - Oregon
Wundrbread33 replied to rodeo's topic in Carolina Panthers
Johnson vs. UCLA DJ is #2. Look for the edge with white tape on his arms. His athleticism shows in game. Combine speed shows. He looks strong. Very heavy handed and doesn’t get moved much. A few near sacks but DTR got the ball out. Struggled in space, but UCLA has good backs. Looks raw but he is raw. Overall good first impression to me. Incredible speed/power traits. Long arms. Didn’t get pushed around at all in this game. I’m more comfortable after a quick watch. 25 or not, if he can learn, he already has the prototype body/strength of a starting edge. No waiting on him bulking up. -
The way this board treats Corral…is the way YGM deserves to be treated.
-
Wanted edge, but TE/guard could be looking nice at 39. Two TE’s helped Cam crush his rookie year.

Matt Corral post to instagram

I didn’t see it either. I’m ignorant to Instagram but maybe it was an expiring post? -
Trade YGM for Jameson Williams and his bookie you cowards!
-
Man this draft doesn’t seem like the one to trade up for a WR.

CJ Stroud: I’m a football player, not a test taker

It really is. That’s life. My work deals with community living. There could be 1000 people living at a property, but less than 10 create all the problems and complaints. It can “seem” like everyone is complaining…but reality doesn’t match.

Frank Reich: Panthers have made their decision

Shocking I know. Everyone just repeats “but mayo” and “he eats bananas with the skin on.” He could just…and I know this is crazy to say…..have a sense of humor? -

Well…I won’t be shocked if it’s Levis now. I’m going to go ahead and assume it is so I get a head start on the homer coping I need to do. -
Same. He’s finally in position. Excited for him and Barno, even if we take edge. Lack of athletic traits won’t be the reason for it not working out.
-
Guys come on. Chill.
-
Good to see Corral out there. Some on this board made it seem like he’d be in a wheel chair in a padded room with no playbook until September.
-
Just win baby. I’m confident that one of Rookie/Corral will figure it out with this staff. I just don’t really want to watch Dalton play football tbh.
-
I don’t know what to think. Im pretty certain the “Levis is a douchebag” angle is uninformed and incomplete though. None of us know the dude. And (largely) basing the character of someone off social media posts isn’t the way to do it. No matter who we draft, things are looking up for this franchise.

I know some people will say “but preseason”, but we already have two shots to fix QB between our #1 on Thursday, and Corral from last draft. Corral isn’t lacking in arm and athletic traits, so he effectively becomes a literal backup, and the backup option if our rookie is mediocre at best. We have a dream staff of teachers on paper, so chances are decent enough to me that one of Young/Corral will figure this NFL QB thing out. If not then we deal with it in 2-4 years.

Sunny Sunday before the draft

You will be shocked by the poster who poo’d this. That aside, I agree with OP to the core. Cheers friend. Too much to be excited about right now as a Panthers fan. -
Yes absolutely. But as I told Gerry in a reply, at the end of the day I can’t base it on anything but instinct and size bias. I naturally think small guys get hurt more than big guys because it seems like common sense, but I can’t prove that instinct is valid. There’s just so many variables. Think all the way back to Doug Flutie. He only got a chance because the big prototype guy couldn’t stay healthy. Young may get hurt right away, and if he does it will be blamed on his size, but even then…that might not be the reason even if it’s the first thought that comes to mind. A great example is our boy Corral. What happened when he injured his lis franc? Everyone said “injury prone” and “frail frame”….but…that’s bullshit. He hurt his lis franc because he was unlucky. His cleat was planted, and the pass rusher spun him in an awkward way (just like with Cam). Corral isn’t a little kid getting tossed around. He’s a professional athlete that got twisted in a way the foot didn’t like. Horn is labeled as injury prone. He had a random non contact injury his first year, then, him doing nothing wrong, got blasted with friendly fire by one of our hardest hitters directly on his arm and it broke. Just makes me lean more toward complete randomness than anything else. I get it if people think I’m spouting nonsense though. It’s just observational stuff.

I like CJ a lot too. I like Corral as well (and catch hate for that lol). I’ve given up on worrying about Young getting hurt. At the end of the day, I assume being small means “hurt more often” but I can’t back that up with anything outside of bias and instinct (personally…just me), so I’m letting it go. Darnold gets hurt consistently, and he’s prototype. Hooker in this draft? Prototype…got hurt. Big Ben…huge…dealt with injuries his whole career. This doesn’t prove anything I know, but it seems more random than anything, and at minimum more complicated; with more variables than simple height a weight. Some guys are tougher than others too. How flexible is the player? How instinctual are they? Do they “feel” a big hit coming and get down? Are they too tough for their own good (maybe Cam)? Do they have frail bones or thick bones? Maybe diet influences? Genes? You get the idea. Just too many variables and hypotheticals. I get the concern though because I’ve felt it too, but I just don’t know how valid the concern I feel is or not. Anyway I think you are a good poster Gerry so don’t let the trolls get you down.

Lots of game tape showing what happens then. He’s at an advantage for sure. Despite not having a Mahomes arm, that’s why people throw the Mahomes comparison out there. He also navigates and buys time within the pocket at a high level, and has a 6th sense for the line of scrimmage. So he evades in, and out of the pocket, while keeping his eyes downfield. It’s quite impressive.
-
The only part of his game that leaves me wanting more is his arm strength. I’ve said it before that it’s good enough it won’t hold him back, but it’s probably somewhere between Teddy and Sam in strength, which is enough, but like everyone I love a laser if possible.

I thought this too but saw more footage BEHIND him, and that really allowed me to watch his head, and how he goes through his reads and what he sees. Sometimes when he holds the ball, he actually sees an open guy, but checks a potential better option, and if covered, he goes back to the open man he saw. He won’t have that option as frequently in the NFL, but that can be coached, since he does indeed go through reads quickly. I think he naturally was confident in his line, so his inner clock knew he had the time to do that. If he gets accustomed to less time, he will adjust. At least that’s what it looked like to me. We shall see.
