That trade was also for the 3rd ranked QB in that draft. It's everyone's guess really what it's going to cost, but with so many QB needy teams, I could easily see Indy matching that identical offer and Chicago would take it because it it would only drop them 3 positions. The reason the Jets got what they did for Darnold is Rhule played his cards with T2G way too early. He tried to play poker with his cards face up and we got taken to the cleaners. Going into a trade negotiation desperate is never going to work out for you.

Player vs player I have no issue with it. A QB pushing over the top isn't going to affect the way that pile moves too much horizontally. Make that a QB pushed by 2 RBs and that can change dramatically depending on which way they decide to push. When all your muscles are tensed and you're body is positioned and driving forward, it's very difficult to react to a lateral move also. Also, extra falling bodies from behind can knock feet out when traction is already a serious issue. I would liken it to trying to drive a truck with a loaded trailer and you have no idea if or which way it's going to fishtail. You may be able to control it, you may not. If you lose control though, the results aren't going to be pretty.

There really needs to be some type of developmental league other than college football. I think a lot of the problem stems from you have teams like Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Georgia, etc. playing a lot of games against far inferior teams. These guys are making the jump to the NFL and have only faced that level of talent once or twice a year, plus playoffs. It's really hard to determine how good a college QB is when he's throwing to a top 10 receiver vs a top 250 ranked CB.

Especially for the linemen. Because they are so low and have to have their feet dug in so well, there really isn't a whole lot of flexibility for them. A couple thousand pounds of beef falling sideways is going to end up hurting 4 or 5 guys at once. They'll end up stopping it once they're having to cart off multiple players with Jason Sehorn like injuries. I remember watching that as he went airborne and almost puked.

What's going to happen is someone is going to get seriously hurt and snap some legs when that pile goes sideways. I can tell you from experience being on the bottom of that pile with your knee bent sideways that is not something I would ever wish on anyone. 30 years later and it still isn't right.

Could be difficult with Seattle in the market as well if he's there. Was Geno a one hit wonder and how long can they expect him to play at that level? If he's there at 5, I see Seattle running to the podium.

2 years from now, you have Lamar and no DJ because you couldn't pay his contract, a bunch of no name WRs and no way get them because your picks are in Baltimore and over half your cap is tied up in Moton, Burns, Horn, Ickey, Bozeman, Chinn, and LJ. The other 100m or so is going to be needed for whatever 46 players you can get. Franchise QB, same situation. Trading for LJ is a win it all now move and this team isn't win it all now ready. I'm not advocating for Carr. I'm just saying I think it would be harder to build a multi year SB contender than you think

Not arguing that. Just saying the direction we go FA/trade will pretty much identify how we move in the draft.

I never said Carr is better. I actually think it will be harder to build a multi year SB contender with the price LJ will cost vs Carr and elite talent picks. I'm looking at the big picture and you're focused on a single player. Lamar would have done great in Vegas watching his defense give up lead after lead and Josh McDaniels running a team so badly they would have fired him after one season but couldn't afford it. Imagine how bad you have to be to not even last half as long as Matt Rhule.

True but they're available to be had in the offseason if you're willing to pay.

We're signing a vet QB in FA. The level of that signing will give more direction to the way we're going to go in the draft. Rodgers, LJ or Carr, I expect us to pass on a 1st round QB. Darnold, Brissett or similar and I expect us to go for a rookie in rd 1.

It actually is debatable. Lamar missed 4 games 2 years ago and 5 last year. You can only carry an offense if you're playing. His durability is a legitimate concern. His playing style also exposes him to more hits than a standard pocket QB increasing the possibility of getting hurt. Running QBs don't have the longevity of pocket QBs. Then you have to pay his salary and the huge picks/player haul to acquire him. That affects your ability to build your team as a whole. If you're confident giving up 3 1sts and 2nds and/or players plus 50m a year or more guaranteed multi year for a QB that has missed 1/4 of the season each of the past 2 years, that's your prerogative. I If Baltimore is willing to let this amazing MVP QB walk because they don't think they can build a successful team with his salary demands, it definitely begs the question, If Lamar isn't worth the salary he's demanding to his current team, what makes him worth that salary and a crippling amount of draft picks to another? Can he carry a team to multiple SBs and win with all the pieces a team will have to give up to acquire him? And make no mistake, if we traded for LJ for that size haul, I would expect no less than 2-3 SB trips and Lombardis or else we lose the trade. Lamar is a very good player. I don't think he's so exceptional he can overcome the limitations he would place on a team. That's my prerogative.

Carr also had the great neutralizer in Josh McDaniels and one of the worst defenses in the NFL. I'm not saying Carr is better than LJ, but you can't judge any of these QBs in a vacuum.

Also worth noting Garoppolo hasn't been immune to injury himself. I'd worry more about his injury liability than LJ.

If he does, it will be interesting to see what Adams thinks since he made the decision to not play with Rodgers. I'm not so sure the reunion would be a welcome one.

All of this depends on what Carr wants and if he believes he can succeed here under Reich. We are getting a vet QB. That is a certainty. Corral and any rookie will do better if we give them a chance to develop some before throwing them into the fire. Mahomes sat an entire year behind Alex Smith. I wouldn't want to sign Carr to more than a 3 year deal. That would give us an opportunity to take a QB this year at 9 if one we like falls. We have to get past the idea that we are going to be able to trade up. That will only work if someone is willing to move down to 9, which Chicago may not be willing to do, AND other teams don't draft the QB we want. If they view any of the top 4 as a franchise QB, they're not going to move. Chicago is rumored to want one of the top defensive prospects, and I don't think they will drop much past 4 to make sure they get him. That could require a trade up to 3 and then to 1 if we want the #1 and that will cost a damn fortune in picks and/or players. Again, all of this goes back to Carr and his contract demands and the strategy for building. I don't think Carr is as bad as he played with the Raiders. He could be more, he could be less. But I'm much more confident now that we have someone who can actually evaluate QB talent, whether it be Carr, or a rookie QB to move up and get.

The thing about Brady though is he played for less than market value and that cap space was used to bolster the team. He got paid in other ways through the Pats using his supplements or whatever else he was hocking at the time. I won't disagree about having the guy worth the second contract at all, because obviously that's what you want. I just think at some point the bubble is going to burst on these mega QB contracts because they can't win it all by themselves. You have to be able to get some other pieces.

We're getting leftovers from somewhere. Our most seasoned QB going into 23 is not going to be Matt Corral. It all depends on cost, picks and salary.

We've also seen 2 teams (Rams and Bucs) in the last 5 years build the entire support staff, then bring in a QB to take it over the top. They could also take that approach as well since it has worked very recently.

I wouldn't mind going the Smith/Mahomes route. Bring in Carr, draft a QB or keep Corral if this staff decides that's what's best, next year begin transitioning to said rookie after a year to actually get up to NFL speed.
