WR would be easy to do a side by side, similar to RB's. The pool would be equally diluted as the RB pool due to multiple players being utilized and less #1 overall WR's. DE would be a little more complex because you really have to agree on what you want to consider critical aspects of their production. Sacks are obvious, QB Pressures and Hits are important, turnovers forced, maybe tackles for loss. That needs some fine tuning before you could do a good comparison. LT would be extremely difficult. You have to rely on a lot of subjective data to get you there. PBWR, RBWR, PFF ratings, Sacks Allowed, Pressures Allowed, etc. I think OL stats are the most difficult to isolate because they operate so much as a unit that when you have the guy next to you screwing up, it might impact your play pretty considerably. I suppose DT play could be considered that, as well. It would probably be easier to judge OL/DL play on the entire unit than specific players, although pass rushers are probably easier to isolate.

I believe I have done one of these for the top 10 rushers in the NFL regardless of salary and the results aren't terribly different. It's a QB league. Anyone with any sense knows that, it's why all these teams are trying to sell the farm for guys like Watson or trade for Matt Stafford or move up in the draft to get one of these top 4 QB's but there haven't been any offseason rumors of teams trying to acquire CMC, Kamara, Cook, Henry, etc. Hell, look at the incoming RB projections. It includes some stud RB's but they are behind all those QB's, a pile of WR's, OT's, DL, etc. People can shove their head in the sand all they want but there is a KC made the Super Bowl with ~$4 mil invested in RB's(one a first year rookie) and Tampa made the Super Bowl with ~$6 mil invested in RB's.

So, #8 overall in 2021, our 2nd pick in 2021 1st round in 2022 3rd round in 2023 CMC Teddy Robby Anderson The draft pick haul isn't bad, although I wouldn't want to jettison our 2nd in 2021 given how deep the OL draft is. I feel like we can get a starter with that pick. The players are some good and some bad. We get to jettison our top two worst contracts on the roster but it would also result in a total dead cap hit of $27.2 mil in 2021 for those guys alone. Add another $4 mil in cap loss for Anderson, who I really wouldn't want to give up but would be better than some of our guys on rookie deals. But, although we would be toting $31.2 mil in dead cap, it would also free up roughly an additional $16 mil in cap space. If we make that move, we probably would have to get aggressive in free agency since our primary mode of adding talent is going to be reduced this offseason. Hypothetically, were this trade to happen prior to Samuel leaving, you keep him and try and obtain another effective WR to replace Robby and maybe draft a RB to replace CMC. We'd be set for years to come at QB but our margin in the draft would be razor thin.

I can do the same breakdown for QB's but it will likely be fairly heavily weighted in the QB's favor for obvious reasons. I've done a top 10 QB Super Bowl breakdown before and it was pretty obvious how critical the QB is to getting a title. That just isn't the case for RB's or really most positions on the field, in all honesty.

And why would we want to be further committed to a player that we are likely to jettison this offseason? Remember, we would be pushing dead cap into years where we need to be signing contracts for our core players. That's the classic Hurney move of pushing the cap problems down the road.

You just answered your own question about the issue with the 49ers and it isn't a RB. Not to mention after their starting running back went down with injury, their platoon of five RB's had 378 rushes, 1641 yards and 15 TD's. Not too shabby for a team that was plagued with RB injuries all year long. They actually finished 15th in the NFL in rushing yardage as a team and 11th in rushing TD's. Their struggles had a lot more to do with the passing unit that produced the 20th most passing TD's and 3rd most INT's. All they really need to do is get healthy, after all, they still have the same RB's that produced the second most rushing yards and most rushing TD's in 2019 for a 13-3 Super Bowl team. In CMC's career year, the Panthers had the 14th most rushing yards and 5th most rushing TD's, for comparison. The biggest upgrade they should be looking at is a QB. That team is stacked with talent, they just got slammed with injuries in 2020.

It doesn't have a strong record of success in that time period, mainly the opposite. Only 30% of the instances had a top 10 yardage or rushing TD performance and resulted in a winning record. CMC is not drastically different than Ladainian Tomlinson or Marshall Faulk. One who had great career postseason success, one who had almost none.

You have lost your mind if you think anyone in the NFL would give up 2 1st rounders for CMC. Show me one team that is a RB away from a Super Bowl, has the cap space to take him and the draft picks to spend. Just name a single team. I'll give you a hint, it isn't the 49ers.

I wouldn't have given that up for Adams either. But they also use him in a very unusual way as a pass rusher, so I suppose that was worth it for them. We will see how wise that is/was when we see what his price tag is this offseason or next. The deal they gave him was basically $9.9 mil for 2021. Nothing absurd.

Bad comparison. Kyle Boller was a 4 year player with Cal that had a 47.8% career completion percentage. Boller was almost certainly going to be a bust in the NFL.

Well, let's not get too far ahead of ourselves because we haven't even hit free agency or the draft yet. The opportunities may be there but there is an entire offseason's worth of league moves before we have even a partial look at the picture.

Well it isn't just my opinion, it is largely all the successful franchises in the NFL. But I suppose if we take unsuccessful franchises into account, then there is at least a minority of teams that believe it makes sense to waste money on a position of lower value. I wouldn't even argue that he doesn't deserve that money based on Elliott's contract. We just didn't need to be the team that did it. Unsurprisingly, it was the worst GM in the history of the franchise that authored that deal.
