Being aggressive in free agency and trades wins.
45catfan replied to GoobyPls's topic in Carolina Panthers
The Bucs bought their SB and the Rams are doing the same. They got this year and next before their all-star team falls apart. They can't re-sign all these big-name dudes once they hit FA. Oh, they don't have a first round pick until 2024 either. I have two reasons to pull for the Bengals, for one, that franchise needs a trophy for all those years of sucking and mainly I'd really like to see the Rams attempt to buy a SB victory fall short. -
Gilmore makes Pro Bowl

Only for a little while, he'll be a FA in a couple months. -
This fan base is so desperate they are looking for a 'silver bullet' solution. What's the most valuable spot on an NFL roster? The QB. So find a QB and problem solved, right? All the noise about weak QB class, we have no OL to keep the poor guy from getting pummeled and a clueless coaching staff...all that stuff is irrelevant. DRAFT A QB...WINNING! Simple solutions for the simple minded.

The fan vote is almost meaningless. Pro Bowl voting is a joke. -
That's how you David Carr them. Plenty of examples of how crap organizations ruin a young QB's career. It's like playing the lottery, sure you may get lucky, but chance are it's not going to be a winning ticket.

What??????? I have yet to see any big board even remotely looking like this. Zappe being about the only one is the correct spot on some.

Or you can have the Pittsburgh model where they build a competitive team and then draft a rookie QB with enough efficient parts around him to be successful. I mean Big Ben went to the playoffs as a rookie and won the SB in his second season. Same with Tom Brady in his second year. See the trend? You don't have a crap organization, with crap coaches that has a crap track record and think you can draft a QB and they will save the franchise. Sure, #1 overall picks like Burrow and Murray pan out with decent teams and good coaching. Two problems here, our team is not even decent and there's not a QB worthy of the #1 overall pick even if we had it.
-
Remember it's a process, so improving on 5 wins is a step forward in the 7-year plan. Rhule can do that managing Darnold's game and building the OL, but he can't do that with a rookie QB, especially in this class.

I find it funny and ironic that Willis has done so little yet is the hot name now. Last year when I wanted us to take Tray Lance, the dude's game was put under a freaking microscope by some people here and picked apart. We have a weak QB class and a guy that can't hold a candle to Lance is getting super hyped. Lol, our fan base is desperate. Willis is R-A-W folks and a highlight film composed of 90% run plays for a QB isn't impressive to me.

The only reason and I do mean ONLY, that drafting a QB would be acceptable to me is assures Rhule of another losing season.
-
All Rhule needs to get a year 4, so...

Just saying the shoe is on the other foot. Who cares if they agree with the rule or not? They benefited last week from the current format and got beat under the same rules. I have no problem with sudden death as long as both teams touch the ball at least once. That's the only thing that needs to change. The college format is stupid, IMO.
-
Why, so he can sit on the bench until he learns how to be a pocket QB and read coverage? This isn't FCS and he's not going to be able to run all over the field until guys come open. Dude absolutely tanked when he played FBS talent. The NFL isn't any easier.
-
The OT favor is returned to the Chiefs from last week. Now they know how it feels not being able to answer the other team's score. They even had the ball first. No excuses.
-
The team may look to go old school in revert back to a John Fox mentality and lean heavy on the run game. I'm not sure investing in the OL is purely looking to upgrade pass-pro (which is obvious), but being able to pound the rock effectively. Keeping Darnold in 3rd and manageable is the objective. His short passing game isn't the problem, it's the longer routes where he has to deal with the back seven. Quick hitters like HB screens, smoke screens, slants, stacked concepts where a 'rub' gets a guy free in the first several yards...things like that he's efficient at. The problem was we were nearly always in 3rd and long where the pass rush came into play and deeper routes came into play, thereby requiring Sam read the entire secondary. That, we know, he's pretty bad at.

My bad, I thought that position got filled too by the Bears. Not yet though.
-
Apparently it's official now, McDaniels to Vegas

Welp, that's another job Joe Brady lost out on. Rhule has damaged that young man's career. He'll recover, but it may take a season or two before he lands on his feet. He may have to go back to college or take a position coach job if he stays in the NFL. I hope he's not arrogant enough to think he's going to land another OC gig in the NFL right away.

Bouye and Daley are the only players that make a whole lot of sense to part ways with. That's only $6 million in savings, which translates in free agency to acquiring one pretty decent player or a couple of above average guys. In the grand scheme of things, not much difference.
-
I agree completely, it's just the spot where the team has pigeon-holed themselves into. That's where we stand currently before the draft. Again, I'm extremely worried that Rhule has got to Tepper's ear. If we do draft a round 1 QB, Rhule all but assuredly has told Tepper it's going to be a two year project...at minimum.
-
My biggest worry is Rhule has already primed Tepper for a better, yet non-winning season with a nod to 2023 as the year it comes all together. Remember, Rhule has a 7-year deal and next season isn't even the halfway point. Rhule is the ultimate used car salesman, so unless the wheels come completely off this coming season, I'm not convinced that even another losing season is necessarily Rhule's last straw.
-
Agreed, nothing else makes sense. The only other thing I can think of is we trade for current backup (like Minshew this season) or sign a FA QB (Mariota, Brissett or Trubisky) as insurance in case we hit a 'break glass in emergency' scenario with Darnold. We know Darnold doesn't have a much higher ceiling, but I don't think we've seen his floor yet either. That's the scary part.
-
Too many good tackles in this year's draft (on a rookie deal, keep in mind) to take a swipe at an aging, very highly paid OT with injury concerns.
-
The team made their bed with Darnold, period. He's likely to be the starter next season if I had to guess. The Panthers are in a no-win situation on the QB front. A rookie QB starting means a 99.9% chance of a losing season, Darnold starting is still likely a losing season, but a few more wins and probably no significant upgrade can be had in a trade without sacrificing the future. That's the scary part, this team was pretty aggressive in trades this season signaling a 'win now' mentality. If Rhule thinks his butt on squarely on the hot seat for next year, he could give a crap about how that leaves the team in 2023 and beyond, giving the farm away all the while as he's on his way out the door.
