Michael Vick relinquishes number 7

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Jets beat writer Manish Mehta says Vick will be wearing the number 8 this season.  Geno Smith will remain number 7.

On his Instagram, Vick touted the change from 'MV7' to 'MV8'.

Don't know about the Jets overall history, but 8 hasn't had a good history with Panther quarterbacks (Mehta points out the last Jets number 8 was backup Mark Brunell).

As much crap that Vick gets (a lot of it deservedly so), that's a pretty cool move as a teammate to do that.

And I'm a huge misanthrope that really likes dogs.

As for the number, not really a huge issue... not much Vick could do if Geno didn't wanna give it up...  I'm sure he's not "happy" about it...

I really don't get why people still bring up the dog stuff (not really talking about you, just in general)... I hated Vick as a Falcon... I'm glad he got busted for his role in all of that, but in all reality he got more time than he would have had he not been famous and he did his time... and has successfully moved on from it...

There are people who would argue he got less time than an unknown guy would have.

(don't know, but I do remember the county prosecutor assigned the case was a chicken s--t)

Regardless, the dogfighting thing is, objectively speaking, a bigger blot on his record than his being a Falcon.  Granted, rival fan perspective may skew things somewhat in this forum, but put aside the Panther glasses and that's what i see.

As to Vick the football player, he was always overrated, the definition of an 'athlete', not a quarterback.  And these days, he's an injury waiting to happen.

Not all that worthy a discussion honestly, but I thought it worth posting since we're in 'lull' mode.

(were there more going on, I wouldn't have bothered)

Yeah, and I'm a huge dog lover... have three right now...  I just think it's all overblown, particularly since he did his time and has seemingly straightened up completely...

As for Vick the QB I think he's very athletically gifted, but yes... if he keeps playing the way he's played the past few seasons he won't last more than 5 games.  He's too old to be taking the kind of punishment he has been.

I doubt he'll do much with the Jets on the field.

What exactly did Vick "relinquish"?

Geno had number 7 and he did not relinquish it to Vick.  Vick really had no say in the matter.

Vick is the new guy....not Geno.

Fair point.  Just how I worded it, I suppose

Agreed, though I think the Jets plan is for him to be backup/competition for Smith.

I kinda doubt they signed him to be a mentor.  (would you?)

I honestly can't answer that question... idk how or if he played that role in Philly with Kolb or Foles

    • I wouldn’t be surprised if the Pats win it all or at least get there. Maye is awesome.
    • Young quarterbacks Drake Maye, Bo Nix, and Bryce Young have led their teams to undefeated records since October.   Drake Maye has guided the New England Patriots to a 5-0 record in that period, with 2,285 passing yards and 17 touchdowns in nine games. Bo Nix has directed the Denver Broncos to a 5-0 stretch, throwing for 1,976 yards and 17 touchdowns, contributing to a 7-2 overall start. Bryce Young, in his second season, has led the Carolina Panthers to a 4-0 run since October, accumulating 1,390 yards and 11 touchdowns amid a 4-4 record.   Undefeated QBs since start of October (min. 4 starts)   Drake Maye 5-0 Bo Nix 5-0 Bryce Young 4-0   Bryce Young when asked about his mindset during game winning drives: "You don’t rise to the occasion you fall back to the level of your training."
    • 1. Cowboys-No explanation needed. 2. Rest of NFC South equally. If I had to pick I would say Falcons.    3. Eagles- Both of the games I have attended there the fans were so horrible. The fan base is so ridiculously misbehaved, I’ve never seen such immaturity. 4- Lions- I have cousins in Michigan that grew up Lions fans and they are some of the most obnoxious people I have ever met, as are all of their Lions buddies. The NFL has been lucky that Detroit has been in the cellar for its eternity.    5. Tie between Bears and Vikings. Both act like Steelers, Cowboys, Niners fans do with nostalgia and legendary seasons but neither have ever really had them. They act like they each won 5 super bowls in previous decades but never accomplished poo outside of Chicago in 85.
