Pre-Draft News Items

A thread for tidbits of Draft and NFL news in the week leading up to the draft.

_______________________________________________________________________________

Peter King is reporting that the Eagles are so hyped to get a prime wide receiver in this draft that they might actually trade up to do so.  Their likely target: Odell Beckham.

Gil Brandt believes it's possible Khalil Mack gets taken ahead of Jadaveon Clowney.  There's even some speculation that Mack could go number one overall to the Texans.

Adam Schefter has reported that Miami OT Seantrel Henderson tested positive for marijuana at the Combine.  Henderson is the guy who also failed to finish his own Pro Day workout.

Ian Rapoport, citing Vic Tafur of the San Francisco Chronicle, is hearing that the Raiders have completely ruled out taking a quarterback as an option at number five.  They've said differently in prior reports.

Mike Mayock thinks it's possible Nebraska corner Stanley John-Baptiste winds up being taken in the first round (he's generally been rated in the second or third).  As a big corner, the success of Richard Sherman has helped his stock a lot.

Mayock also speculates that Notre Dame tackle Zack Martin could be taken somewhere between nine and thirteen.  Mayock called Martin "as safe a player as there is in the draft".

The Eagles have signed a guy named Allejandro...but not that one.

Allejandro Villanueva is a 6'9, 277 former Army Ranger who did three tours of duty in Afghanistan.  He's also a former offensive lineman at West Point who got a shot with the Bengals a few years back but didn't catch on.  He went to the Super Regional Combine as a tight end, but the Eagles are signing him as a defensive lineman.

Kiper and mcshay just did their risers/fallers on sportscenter. Allen Robinson listed as a riser and said he would most likely come off the board early 2nd round. Also mentioned fuller as a riser and said possibly mid 1st. Mentioned Ebron as a faller. Said mid to late 1st

If Ebron falls to 28 we take him, right?

Do you take him over a guy like Allen Robinson?

If we are simply looking at BPA then yeah, I would.

The only thing that worries me is how he'd fit in Shula's scheme. Olsen lining up in a traditional TE spot on the line with Ebron out wide or in the slot would be a nice combo considering how much Cam loves throwing to his TEs (look at Shockey and Olsen duo).

    • We agree here dawg. I'd love for Bryce to succeed as would all huddlers. I have not seen a single huddler hate Bryce for anything other than his play on the field / potential / skillset. He hasn't gotten any of the irrational hate having nothing to do with football that Cam got. And yeah I understood going into this season with Bryce again as there weren't a ton of options, but man we missed the fuging mark on upgrading at backup QB with someone who could actually push Bryce. Bryce had zero pressure on him with a 100% washed up Dalton being the only other NFL caliber QB in the system. That absolutely needs to change this offseason. Ideally with an actual starter upgrade but that seems extremely unlikely due to not having many FA options and a bad draft. But at the very least with someone like you mentioned, young/upside and/or day 3 pick in the draft.   Another note, we have a top paid and top performing OL, great young talent at WR incl. likely OROY, great RB group, average all around TE group, offensive coach with creativity in the system and good play designs (poor situational playcalling but still I put out current offensive coaching staff over Shula who held Cam back for instance). Not the absolute best situation for a QB to be in, but still a very good situation around him. And yet we have a bottom 8 offense (6th lowest points scored). Imagine taking a victory lap for a QB leading his team to the 6th lowest points scored in the league and the 22nd highest passer rating (despite being asked to do less than many other QBs; i.e. Bo Nix who isn't great either and has a slightly lower passer rating but Sean Payton actually lets him try to throw the ball deep and has him throw significantly more than Bryce). Crazy
    • similar to Atlanta and the NHL.  Atlanta has lost two NHL teams (and lost a minor leaguer).  Now there's another coalition pulling together another proposal for Atlanta to get an NHL expansion. While I'd like hockey to be back in Atlanta 'cause hockey is fun, I am skeptical that it'll happen based on previous teams' experience here alternatively: similar to Atlanta hosting a Major Tennis Tournament in advance of the US Open every mid/late summer.  Aside from the fact that Atlanta is said to be the country's largest Tennis playing city (with both USTA and ALTA, along with a number of side leagues) - playing tennis outdoors in Atlanta summer is miserable *and* they had difficulty attracting players... ticket sales were not good. So the Atlanta Open closed after 14 years.  They just couldn't make it happen, even if for all intents it appears to be massive tennis interest in the surrounding area.
    • So I saw where Luke was doing that show parallel to the game. Whatever it was, statcast something something, knew it would be a good watch. I don’t get ESPN any more but that would be one of the about few things I would watch outside of games.     He doesn’t fool around on the radio broadcast.
