Sax's 4-Days 'till Mock

I’m mostly going with the big and tough competitors.  Many may not like the first pick, but what the hell (be kind haha):

Draft

1-Donte Moncrief WR Ole Miss 6’2 220

The media didn’t really hype him up but he has all the tools and when I look at the crop and ask “Who can really help us to both move the chains and score,” I see Moncrief.  You never know, maybe Latimer/Adams are the smokescreens so we get him.  He’s a starting WR and we met with him as much as anyone.  I want him before the 9ers or some team takes him if Pryor, Fuller, Cooks, OBJ, Ebron, Martin, and Kouandijo are gone.  Scouts are high on this kid and I like him over KB, Lee and Latimer.  (WR1/2)

2-Antonio “Tiny” Richardson LT (or) RT Tennessee 6’6 336

This cat can play LT early and help out if needed on the right.

Tiny-Amini-Kalil-Chandler-Bell sounds like a decent OL lineup.  Still need depth/developmental at tackle.  Overall: a pass protecting and road grading hog molly. What’s not to like? (LT)

3-Jaylen Watkins CB Florida 6’0 194

Watkins is explosive yet also a really fluid defensive back.  He’d be great to fill in at slot, CB2 or even safety.  He’s my favorite of the Florida defensive backs and would fit well with White and Cason.  Fills a big need (CB, Nickel, and S depth)

4-Robert Herron WR Wyoming 5’9 193

I like Norwood but think he’s gone.  Since we now have Moncrief, Cotchery & Avant, we could use a shifty slot guy who can have return capabilities.  I like Herron a lot and seems he’s a good route runner with NFL ready skills.  (WR, PR & KR)

5-Larry Webster DE Bloomsburg 6’6 252

Webster is an athletic freak with a b-ball background and football in his blood.  May take time to develop but could also give the unique option as a 2nd TE in the red zone imo.

6- Justin Britt OT Missouri 6’6 325

We need depth at line even though our starters would likely be in place.  His injury makes him slip to us.  I see us taking a tackle late.

7-Nate Askew OLB Texas A&M 6’3 241

I think we go OLB at some point in the draft.  Seems like a cool prospect we met with.

Notable UDFA

Garret Gilbert QB SMU

It’s not worth spending a draft pick on a developmental 3rd string QB but I think our staff wants to find one and Garret could be a good one.

Guys I didn’t draft but would want somehow:

Dion Bailey at S- I believe Bailey has starting safety written all over him and it’s not a given Lester, or Harper on a one year deal is anything special.  Could still use a big safety addition.

Kevin Norwood at WR- A very good possibility for us and can see him fitting in our methodical offense VERY well.

As always, everybody reads it differently this time of year, so no biggie.

My comments would be that the first two guys were taken a round too early

If you had picked a fantastic CB in the first, then Montcrief, then Tiny, you might have come out even better.  But hey, the pain for all of us will subside in a few days.

Thanks stirs.  My thinking is that there will be a big run on OTs in round 2 because of the guys capable of starting at RT.  Richardson is one of the few who could start LT which imo warrants him in consideration with the tier of Turner, Fleming, and Bitonio.  JaWuan James is another sleeper imo for us to land.

Watkins is my DB prospect to keep an eye on but there could possibly be better value there maybe at OLB or WR.  I think Tripp, Landry and Norwood could be gone by that pick which is who I like there as well.

If we land (1) Fuller (2) Moncrief (3) Richardson (4) Norwood, that'd be an unbelievable haul imo.  That's my dream draft right there but I really do like Watkins in our defense.

I mean you filled our needs pretty well but don't know if the value lines up with the picks.  So I don't hate it.. it's not bad by any means.

I like the Herron and Britt picks.  And yeah, that's a great dream draft you mentioned.

Switch Moncrief and Tiny.

If Moncrief is there round 2, I'd be more inclined to go with Kouandijo/James/Moses/Bitonio in the 1st..but ideally, I love Fuller even though he won't be there imo.

    • Either way there's some tough teams on the schedule this year, on paper anyways.
    • Same. I would prefer a MNF game earlier in the season. As if more likely has some significance in case things go south this season. If we perform well enough we could even get another game forced to a Sunday night spot later in the season.
    • Wanted to jump into this thread. Although I do not post anymore I do look in as there are a few old friends around. Loved hearing some of the names you mentioned.  Another  oldie is NanceUSMC.  He is the one who got me here from the old Observer forum.  Good guy and smart football guy. I have learned a lot from a lot of good Huddlers over the years, Over time. we have sadly lost a few who left this earth too soon.  Anyone who know of someone, it would be nice to try to make a list.  One of the more recent, CosmoGirl,  was someone that kind of hit hard.  Life sucks sometimes. Some of the best times were when we had our own tailgate and could meet up in person.  I think it made us better. Several dedicated volunteers, lead by LiverMush, started setting things up in the wee hours of each gameday morning.  Don't know all those regulars but I remember JakeFlake was one.  For you newbies...each game,  a Huddler (or a group) sponsored the food for each tailgate.  Eating was free but a donation was asked for.  At the end of the year those donations were used to buy bicycles for Toys for Tots.  Over the years Huddlers bought a lot of new bikes for kids for Christmas.  (I am guessing a couple of hundred each year.)  We had a good time getting together, got to make friends in person, and then got to feel like you were doing something good. It was truly a community. I got to meet Dan Morgan at one of our tailgates...he brought pizza from his restaurant.  How many of you remember that?  Glad the restaurant did not make it....lol. Not only have people changed, and come and gone.....but the entire nature and purpose has changed. Nothing lasts forever and we move on but we still like to think about good times. Same reason we take pictures. Want to ask a question I have not seen anyone else mention......who remembers    "The Couch" ?  We have argued, laughed, lived the ups and downs of football and dealt with a little real life along the way.  A thanks to  the Mods who keep this going.  I am sure they sacrifice a lot of their time out of love for the forum and the Panthers. Take care my friends and be well.  I will close with my new favorite quote which I think is greatly needed in these difficult times.
