Round 1 - Carolina Panthers select WR Kelvin Benjamin FSU

Probably because our GM with 25+ years scouting experience, scout team, and WR coach believe in him.

And that holds more weight than anything his detractors can say.

Dwayne Jarrett, Everett Brown, Armanti Edwards, And Jimmy Clausen were all evaluated by scouts with years of experience as well. Experience is an overrated quality when it comes to talent evaluation. First round picks are easier to see. Late round guys are where scouting really comes into play if you plan on uncovering a gem.

That said, I think he may have been a reach at 28. We don't run near as vertical offense as before and now we have a TE/WR tweener with as unimaginative offensive coordinator as you can have. I'm not sure of the fit and I'm not sure that he will be fully utilized(which isn't saying much considering his only real skill isn't a skill at all...height and size). I don't have faith in Shula to think this will help anymore than a LT.

Gettleman: "Like last year, value met need." #Panthers loved Benjamin's football instincts.

Gettleman says that Benjamin makes catches when pressured, something difficult to teach.

Gettleman on Benjamin pick: "I'm sure that Cam's not mad at me now.:

Gettleman doesn't feel like the NFL will be too big for Benjamin, who was highest player left on Panthers board.

god I want to pie this several times.

Rivera got the impression Benjamin was a humble, team-oriented player. "I'm impressed by who he is."

Rivera: I'm thirlled about it. when you get a player with that talent you will create opportunities for other people.

He said he "didn't want to let the quarterback down." Ron said "I love that about him."

Everyone in stadium knew ball was going to Benjamin at the end of the national title game. Benjamin said he knew he'd catch it...

    • I think the qualification has changed over time though. A deep ball play used to take 4 to 6 seconds for the receiver to get to that spot on the field. Now a receiver can be there in 2.5. That's less time than most QBs have to set and throw. In my mind a deep route takes time to develop. A crossing route and a deep route can't take the same amount of time at full speed. You can have 4 deep balls on the same drive,  almost 5 if you do 5 20 yard throws goal line to goal line. That doesn't even make sense when you say it out loud.
    • The sad part is it looks manicured enough that he's aware it's running away from him.  Also, I just wanted to give you some fun loving grief on King Haynes today having a chance to throw a game winning TD, and was wildly errant, and ultimately picked off to end the game.  So happy I won't have to hear anything else about The Golden Calf of Bristol lite ever again watching college football.
    • I just think Panthers believe in Bryce far more than the fans do and he is most likely going to be the QB at least the next two seasons. the real shot of us moving from Bryce is not getting an extension, till then they are going to give him every chance to succeed and I just want to win.
