Corey "Philly' Brown + A look at our new WRs

I guess that I see it a little differently. I don't see any WR as a lock to make this team except for Cotchery (and, now, Benjamin). I think that Avant and Underwood are being given way too much credit from the fans, and that King and McNutt are not being given enough. I could be wrong though. Intellectually, you're probably more on target than I am.

i don't think you are giving avant enough credit. that guy is definitely a lock. he's one of the best most reliabke pass catchers in the league and he's tough as nails. he's just not dynamic, but he's as reliable an option a QB can have. like i said, cotchery, avant, and benjamin will be the guys getting the vast majority of passes from cam in the WR corps and there just isn't really enough to go around for anyone else to make alk that much of an impact. we'll have a speed guy line up on the outsode for a couple passes a game, but that just isn't what we do much of because this is ball control football. deep passes are only to spread the D out a little.

when you consider olsen and the RBs will also be catching a significant portion of a very limited number of passes, there just isn't going to be a chance to try out the young guys outside of benjamin.

and with the number of drops we had last year and the choices of two of the more reliable pass catchers in the league being brought in, there's no way those two guys won't be seeing the field. lot.

Agree on Underwood but not on Avant..he is a known solid guy to have.  Shown over the years to be a guy that'll produce if need be and you know what you're going to get out of him.

1. Avant will definitely make the roster. He might not do much and be a 4th stringer, but he'll be here when we need him.

2. Seriously this Brown guy has some great fake-cuts.  If you watch these highlights he's able to shift his hips and swing his shoulders completely to one side then explode in the other direction.  Impossible to tell anyone's actually receiving ability from a highlight video, but cuts like that are a trait that translate to the NFL.

I have some OSU friends that could not believe he was not drafted in the late rounds. I don't know jack-poo about him but he seems fast & can get some YAC. How does he look as in being able to hold up in the NFL with his size/weight??

I don't think we are done bringing players in, even as late as third cuts in August.

Before the draft I thought a fourth/conditional third 2015 pick was too much for Steve Johnson. Maybe it still is.  But I don't rule out a late addition or two.  All these top WR picks have to kick some vets to the curb, it's simple math.

Corey Brown: two-time 2nd Team All-Big Ten (2012, 2013), just the second Ohio State receiver in school history to have consecutive seasons of at least 60 receptions...other was David Boston; 1997-98 (who was drafted #8 overall in 1999 draft and became an All Pro and Pro Bowl WR for the Cardinals

compare Brown's 2013 season to early 2nd R pick Marquis Lee and early 4th R pick Jalen Saunders of Oklahoma:

Corey Brown 63 rec 771 yds 12.24 avg 10 TD

Jalen Saunders 61 rec 729 yds 11.95 avg 8 TD

Marquis Lee 57 rec 791 yds 13.88 avg 4 TD

compare their 40 times

Brown - 4.45 forty

Lee - 4.43 forty

Saunders - 4.37 forty

So why did Brown go undrafted? Hands?

As a Spartan, and Big 10 fan I can say the kid can be a pain in the azz. You had better pay attention when he is on the field. Not sure why he wasn't drafted outside his smallish size. He may get a shot at Returning before any actual playing time. But as much as I hat OSU, I would give the kid a shot.

Only as a Panther fan of course. Otherwise, I hope he gets lost on the way to the park.

It's almost impossible to say who will end up on the final roster, especially when it comes to WR's.  There always seems to be what people think in their head will happen, mostly based on highlight tapes, potential, and that players production against college level talent, and then there's what actually happens on the field....hell even players who look like super stars in the pre season get cut before the final rosters are set.    At the end of the day it's a crap shoot, we will adjust accordingly and keep the most versatile players as to save extra roster spots....so if a guy isn't playing special teams as well as receiving than he's most likely gone.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
