2014 World Cup

there are people overrating this team and there are A LOT of people underrating this team.  the "fire klinsmann" cries are a joke.  sure cutting landon was shocking and maybe a little frustrating but he wasn't going to start anyways, and it sounds like jurgen has never liked landon's mindset and mental outlook.  he wasn't going to be much of a difference maker.  the key to this team is jozy altidore and it's that simple.  remember last summer when we were playing some of our best football EVER?  that's because jozy altidore had all the confidence in the world. he goes to sunderland and has a disastrous year and looks like a completely different player, we need him to score soon to get that confidence back up.  like dirtymagic said he's a poacher at heart but he's still our best chance at striker so we really need him to regain some confidence.  if he does it could make a massive difference, because last summer we had a legitimate dangerous threat in front of goal.  remember when we were down 2-0 in BOSNIA? and jozy has a second half hat trick to get a win? this dude can be dangerous, he just needs confidence.

another great point i believe dirtymagic made is about bradley.  for the love of all things holy this guy is a cdm not a cam.  but regardless he's our most important player and arguably the most talented player in all of concacaf.  he's really good.

defense is scary because there's a decent chance our back line against ghana will have never started together.  that's mad scary.  i definitely think beasley and johnson will be the lb and rb.  beasley will probably be our fastest player and gives some attacking threats which we really are going to need.  fabian has bundesliga experience and has had some really big plays for us.  the cb's are where it's a toss-up.  omar has size but he's been in terrible form as of late.  besler is meh i guess.  i bet geoff cameron will be starting, probably at cb even though he played rb at stoke.  again he has premier league experience and is one of our most talented defenders.

yeah, i mean we've seen this team play really well but they haven't been in the same form recently they were last summer.  that team last summer i give a very solid chance of advancing out of the group.  the team we saw last night would get smoked.

I don't see any overreactions, I see a bunch of realism. The team as a whole features a bunch of youth that will eventually be very good and a decent amount experienced players that are on the decline.

Other than Dempsey and Bradley we really have no amazing talent on the roster.

Our year was 2006 when we were ranked 4th in the world, but we blew it.

I am going on the record and saying that we will at least make the quarter's in 2018.

Espn gives them 99% to advance. They havent lost at home man in almost 40 yrs.

I probably phrased that wrong. Not legitimately underrated, but in the sense that it seems as if most people are trying to go with a less obvious pick just for the sake of taking the road less traveled. I've seen/heard of people picking Germany, Spain, England, Argentina, Belgium, Uruguay, France, and Italy. And I think someone I spoke to thinks the Netherlands will win, but I can't remember if they said the Netherlands or Belgium.

Either way, I guess it's deemed as more impressive to pick an unexpected winner, but I've seriously heard a lot more people choosing from the field rather than the home squad.

Do you guys think the Brazlians have an advantage? They grew up playing in the Brazlian weather, are they mentally prepared for the conditions?

Brazil has an advantage at home. They have not lost a competitive home match since like 1975 or something.

My biggest concern for the World Cup is violence and kidnappings. I feel like the games will be great but there are lots of desperate people living near these stadiums.

Unfortunately, you are right. There will be violence. Many people traveling there know this, but will still get entirely too intoxicated and put themselves in bad positions. The extent of the violence is the question here.

    • So Willis had a good game against a poor defense and all of a sudden he is worth 50 million and is guaranteed to be better than Young. LOL I know he looked good in the 3 games he started, and I think he will have success long term, but anyone signing him up for a long term contract for 50 million is taking a huge risk.
    • Is he really though? Rivera was past his prime and probably shouldn't have even started 2019 so his firing wasn't really unexpected or unwarranted. Rhule lasted two and a half years which was about one year too long in my opinion. Bringing him back that third year certainly wasn't impulsive and I would say Tepper was more patient than he should have been. Wilks finished out that third season and did pretty good but most everyone could see he really wasn't anything more than an intern HC. Bringing him back was not the long term answer so not bringing him back was the correct call. Hiring Reich was a mistake from the beginning and he recognized that fairly quickly. I am sure he knew he was going to catch a lot of sh*t for firing him so quickly ( and boy did he ) but it was absolutely the right thing to do given everything that was going on. The firing may have looked impulsive, but I think it was him recognizing he had royally f*ck up and just dealt with it instead of letting it fester.  That brings us to Canales. 2025 was only his second season and yet he delivered 8 wins and the NFC South title. And while that might not sound great, given the lack of talent and cap space they started with, it's a strong step in the right direction. I couldn't imagine Tepper not being pleased with their progress given the crap the Panthers' have been though under his ownership.
