I know, I know this is forbidden talk around here but....I can only help but think how well we'd be at WR with Steve.

We finally draft that big body in the first and he's gone (besides Jarrett/Colbert in the Second). I would've loved to see Smitty groom him.

'Tis life.

The problem is that Smitty NEVER groomed any WR....nor was he interested in doing so.  He even stated such in the media.

Indeed. The need to GROOM what was expected to be a talented young draft pick at WR was likely one of the reasons Smith was CUT.

You beat me to it. Smith would never make a good coach. It's just not in him to "groom" anyone.

It is not the job of a wide receiver to "groom" anyone. He's a player, that is why teams have coaches.

We brought in two of the best character, mentor types in Avant and Cotchery IMO for the specific reason to groom our young receivers in a transitional year.

Steve Smith was basically the worst WR mentor we could ask for.

This

Steve however could teach and give tips, which he did in his last couple years here

How about draft or bring big time talent in at the WR position

Which is why those that have no problem guiding the younger players,  are often more of a benefit to the team,  than those that want nothing to do with the young guys.

True but players need to be leaders and step up as well. The coach can't be everywhere and plus vets are always brought into teams to help groom young players. Smith would cuss out a player in a heart beat while a good vet leader would teach them from their mistakes.

Wasn't there an article a long time ago,  about DA being brought in mainly to help groom Cam?

Some of these posters,  they don't understand that the coaches or GM may ask a WR or a vet player of another position,  how they feel about guiding the younger players.     What they answer is sometimes the difference between having a job and not having a job.

The success or failure of a player ultimately falls on nobody else but themselves at the end of the day. These are grown men.

You or I were never on the practice fields or game fields with him or any other player to know what he did or did not do.

Honestly this scapegoating of Steve Smith for our ineptitude at developing a WR is pathetic.

I doubt KB is sitting around worrying about whether or not he has a "mentor".

Avant and Cotchery are here to be stop gaps and teammates.

If you guys think that they are going to be out here literally holding rookies hands, you are woefully confused.

Stop gaps and teammates. The teammates part is where they will be valuable to younger guys trying to learn the nuances of the professional game.
