Bell Can Succeed at Left Tackle

Recommended Posts

Too many of you guys have watched "The Blind Slide" and took it as gospel for all teams in all situations.  Tackle is important both left and right but to say tackle is the end-all-be-all is ignorant.

The game is 11 on 11, you have to pick your poison.  You cannot dominate at every position on every down every year.

Bell will do his job somewhere between a C+ and B- level and will not dictate this season's outcome as an individual.

Smoke some weed, drink a beer, fap, do whatever you got to do that calms your jimmies and chill out.

Gettleman has got this.

List the top 3 highest paid positions in the NFL.

Now tell me again that tackle isn't that important.

I can't tell you whether Bell will succeed at left tackle.

What I can tell you is that the notion of right and left being different skill sets at the pro level is absolutely correct.

My totally uneducated opinion: the positions do take different skill sets, but the skill set that Bell sacked at playing RT (pass blocking) suggests he'll be even worse at LT when he's required to do the thing he sucks at more. Although I also have no idea if he'll make the switch successfully or not.

My phone auto corrected "sucked" to "sacked" in that last paragraph. Seemed too fitting to change it back...

Nah, my eyes are wide open. It's clear Bell is just a below average stop gap in a rebuilding year until we draft a franchise LT.

Gettleman can't do but so much until those laughable Hurney contracts are off the books.

rebuilding year =/= having holes

Plenty of teams had subpar LT play and went on to succeed

most recently off the top of my head, the Packers.

He is my new whipping boy. I will not rest until he's cut. Until then, I will continue to laugh when he gets blown up (until that leads to Cam getting blasted...which will happen because Bell is garbage). In that case, I will not laugh.

I appreciate OP's insight on the technique changes and how Bell physically could pull this off. I just see a guy who lacks consistent technique, can get over powered against bull rushes, and has mental lapses. Chris Scott next to him might have been a bad pairing, but when Bell's on an island vs a rusher I see more bad than good

I've argued this before and I'll do it again... Jordan Gross was a hell of a left tackle and obviously the best this franchise has ever had. At Jordan's retirement press conference, he sent 3 not-so-subtle hints at DG about how Byron Bell should be the starting left tackle of this football team. If Jordan Gross decided to use his last remaining hour of being a Carolina Panther to push the Bell wagon at this front office then I think we should take his word for it, and if you don't... Get over it! We didn't draft a tackle, we might as well support Byron Bell.

That is all.

Go ahead and sign me up for the Bell fan club, although it seems I may be all by myself.

I do not understand how anyone can think moving Bell will work.

That's like expecting a backup dt start and hold his own at guard!

Oh wait......

well, here's the thing. . . its not anywhere close to like that. LT is a position that few men in the world can play. LT's could probably switch and play other spots but the vice versa just isnt true.

There's virtually 0% chance that Bell starts at LT.

I'm usually not one to argue or question the coaching staff on their decisions. However, with that being said, in no way do i believe Bell can handle the LT position with any positive outcome. He is a backup on any other team. He plays the RT spot very poorly.

If we start the season with Bell at LT then i really feel sorry for Cam. If he performs even average or above average i will come back and eat my crow.
