Cam's new weapons

Recommended Posts

Some of you seem to forget that offense and defense have an effect on each other. If the panthers had chud last year and ran his bs (drives that last 2 minutes) the defense wouldn't have been ranked nearly as high due to being on the field forever.

I definitely think the offense needs to improve but I don't think it was anywhere near as bad as some posters choose to believe.

Average drive lengths:

2011 - 2:42, 7th in NFL

2012 - 2:44, 9th in NFL

2013 - 3:00, 2nd in NFL

That's a mild but not huge improvement.  We still could have been a top 5 defense and have had a much better offense with Chud.

Check the offensive time of possession and then come back and compare.

That's stat is overblown and only used by fans of teams who have a struggling offense. Yes, it's nice to be able to control the clock but it's not the end all be all reason that we magically turned around our season.

By the way your Super Champion Seahawks are in the bottom half of the league in TOP but they realize their defense is good enough that they can rely on it even if they score quickly.

It would be one thing if we were the Saints (who are number one in TOP) and had the ability to score any time our offense is on the field, but we're not and for the most part out offense struggled last year outside of Cam Newton. Take away his game winning drives against the Dolphins, Patriots, and Saints and we're 9-7.

And don't try if credit Shula with those game winning drives, that was all Cam.

Um... We didn't save money by cutting Steve Smith

We saved a crap-ton of money, just not this year. The final two years of his Hurndawg contract would have paid him 17trillion dollars per week.

Also, everyone is using i.e. wayyyy too much up in here. i.e. is an abbreviation for a Latin phrase, meaning "that is." It's not used for listing examples; it's used for clarifying a statement. Think of it as "in essence" or "in other words." For listing examples you should use e.g. instead. All I'm sayin' is I'm just sayin'...

Wow!

If that's true, it's obvious the offense was lacking pieces last year. Cause though time time of possession standing didn't take a big jump, the offensive standings did (though you can probably argue the Panthers were more efficient in 2013, making more of their possessions).

So hopefully, this year, the Panthers can kill two birds with one stone?

So if there were no game winning drives it would have been shulas fault but since there were it was all cam??? I'm far from being shulas biggest fan but wow, talk about shifting blame to fit your agenda!!

You obviously didn't see the original post that started this...

Shula 12-4, Chud 13-19

If you want to give Shula all the credit for wins in which he called a good game, then I'm going to give Cam all the credit in games when he called a horrendous game and we still managed to win.

We were in the hurry up offense in the final stages of all of those games I mentioned, my guess is it was Cam calling the plays..

I'm so excited for this offense.

Love seeing everyone complain about our off-season, usually that translates into a productive season.

When was the last time the off-season winner won anything in the regular season?

This years O will be better, simple as that! And with a rookie 1st round WR!

Um...If we had picked up Smitty's option, we would be on the books for almost 26mil over the next 3 years. In my economy that is a whole lotta money.

Still doesn't explain the changes that Rivera made. Remember most people had thrown in the towel on Shula and Rivera after the Buffalo game.

Ron Rivera dies after the Buffalo game. Riverboat Ron was then born. That is the main change in the team. We became a more aggressive team. We definitely became a better team after Buffalo.

The offense was bad ie bottom half of the league. Anything less than a top 10 O and D is unacceptable.

With how good our D is we should be scoring 30 points a game. ie more stops / better field position / more possessions etc.

Wow, just wow at the lack of football acumen in this post. With the way our Offense is set up, we don't have the possessions to score that many points every game. You do realize other teams play Defense as well? We would have to score on damm near every possession to score that many points.

Our team is not set up to play Madden type football. Sorry if that is unacceptable to you.

Two things this thread never addressed. 1) Cam had the option to audible last year. So saying he had no say in the Offense is just not correct.

2) Cam, for the last year and a half, has learned that the "Check-Down" is his friend. So even if the original play is a deep vertical play, he has learned to take what the Defense has given him.

2 points that are integral to our success. Yet no one seems to grasp them. I guess that makes me the smartest one in the room. lol

Also, regarding the points per drive:

2011 - 2.21, 4th in the NFL

2012 - 1.91, 11th

2013 - 1.99, 10th

So you could say we made more of our possessions in 2013 than in 2012, but less than in 2011.

    • Panthers sign OT Rasheed Walker Terms: One year, up to $10 million Grade: A The price of this deal might be the most shocking of free agency thus far. Walker was widely considered the best free agent tackle this year and was expected to receive a large contract. But his market developed very slowly, so he has signed a one-year deal with a maximum value of $10 million -- meaning the base value is below that -- per NFL Network. For context, my free agency contract model projected a deal averaging $21.8 million for Walker. Instead, it's a short-term commitment for less than half that. And the Panthers are the beneficiaries. Carolina entered this offseason with a possible need at left tackle after Ikem Ekwonu suffered a patellar tendon rupture in the playoffs that put his 2026 season in question. It's also the last year of his contract. The Panthers signed Stone Forsythe as an insurance plan already in free agency, but once Walker's market fell it seemed like they felt adding him was well worth it, too. Our win rate metrics consider Walker to be a solid player. Last season in Green Bay, he was in the 85th percentile among tackles in pass block win rate, though only 22nd percentile in run block win rate. He was in the 69th percentile and 48th percentile in those two metrics in 2024, respectively. Given that Dan Moore Jr. received $20.5 million per year from the Titans last year most -- myself included -- thought Walker would walk away with more than that. Perhaps the struggles of Moore (who wasn't great last season) contributed to Walker's market being cooler than expected, a theory that ESPN's Jeremy Fowler suggested. Walker was also arrested two months ago at LaGuardia Airport in New York for allegedly trying to check-in with a firearm that he had a license for in Wisconsin but not New York. Either way, teams felt differently about Walker than most on the outside thought. But he's a heck of an add for the Panthers at this price. While his run-game contributions might be far from perfect, a weak pass protector at tackle can sink a passing game. Even if this is only a one-year arrangement, Walker should be able to help keep Bryce Young upright
    • Fantastic signing. If he is good, this will make next offseason really interesting. I would imagine that Morgan would try to extend Walker and convince Ikey to move to the right side to replace Moton. This also opens up options at 19 at lot instead of forcing a tackle. I'm not a fan, but I'm definitely more open to Morgen drafting Sadiq now, but there is also Peter Woods, and even some like Dillon Thieneman is now in the mix. Hell, I'm still for another off ball LB.
    • sure, but Panthers are theoretically in their win now window. Their first rounder needs to be a day one starter
