AJ Klein Catching On

Might have something to do with who our head coach is.

When you look at the staff Rivera has built. You have to think back to that first press conference when he said he wanted to hire teachers.

McDermott has proved to be an up and coming coach.

Eric Washington has helped 3rd and 6th round picks become superstar pass rushers. He's done well with Star and KK.

John Matsko on the oline has a Masters in Education to go with 23 years experience. He has a Hall of Fame tackle working under him that can relate to the players.

Ricky Proehl is a credible guy with players whether they are 1st round picks or late round projects.

Al Holcomb has done a great job and he's blessed to have Thomas Davis as a veteran leader, Luke as an ambitious star, and Chase as the guy that can relate to long shots.

Then you have Ron who's seen a lot of Football and paid his dues. He had to learn to be a Head Coach and he delivered an NFC South crown in year three.

But the NFL is dog eat dog. Ron goes into 2014 as the least experienced and decorated coach in the division. What's next?

I remember well the "WHATS GETTLEMAN DOING FUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGG!!!!" reaction by so many when the Klein selection was made.

Me too, but not me. I loved it. Thought he was a steal. I think he is very Luke-ish in his ability to seem to always be around the ball. Very smart. I agree he isn't great at point of attack yet, but he will get better.

We made 3 extremely good picks for our defense last year, I mean we got it done on that side of the ball.

4 because White looks like a baller too. I know he is an undrained pick up but we still brought him in.

They rarely throw to his side of the field.

Nice to see Klein continue to develop. Unfortunately the depth stops with him though, Very concerned with our LB depth.

Blackburn isn't bad at all for backup purposes. Also, Voth was reminding folks that we play with two LBs and a Nickel 75% of the time.

I was still considering Chase the starter. He played great last week. Outside of AJ I don't have any faith in the other LB's.

I guess we're getting spoiled a little having 4 decent guys that could start. Its just that the depth looks awfull.

It I a give and take between the two of them, Klein and Blackburn. Klein brings more athleticism and speed to his game, so he is much better in coverage. Blackburn brings more instinctiveness and strength with his games, which makes him a better tackler and better against the run. I'd say that we do what we did last year. Start Blackburn and bring Klein in on pass plays with a few additional reps and he will eventually replace Blackburn...

Yeah, I'm not very familiar with how the depth looks after Klein, to be honest.

    • I'm going to humor you in case you're actually being sincere and are just ignorant. Also, you're not very good at tossing barbs. Please stop.  I did not say random; I said arbitrary. That is a much different thing.  You're comparing QBR in starts across multiple coaching staffs, seasons, offensive personnel, against defenses with wildly variable of levels of competency, and don't really have a lot of data points. Choosing the dividing line at pre and post benching is arbitrary, and it's not even consistent. He was benched in his first season too. Why not when Reich was fired? Or when Canales was hired? Or when they drafted XL?  Also, what are potential lurking variables here? I would if I was grading this tell you that you're not really showing anything useful. If your argument is that his QBR has trended up on a per game average from "this point" on then congrats yes you're correct. This is called cherry picking data.  I understand you're trying to make this quick and dirty, but QB rating by itself doesn't really paint a useful picture. A simple thing you could do it do a second line along the same time domains of what the defense ranked league wide at the time they played each other. I would try to use a cumulative stat from the same source, tho. So qb rating v scoring defense across these specific truncated set of games that have occurred across three seasons with multiple coaching staff.  Some other suggestions for you  1. This is the wrong type of graph. You want a scatter point.  2. The range for QB rating improvement is like 15 points or whatever. The y axis is broken up into 25s. How can I quantify the line?  3. Quarterback rating goes to 158.3. Why does your line only go to 125?  The only thing I would really take from this is that Bryce Young sucks in a way that QB rating doesn't pick up on. This is what you'd call a "problem with the data."  Lastly, I would point out that QB rating as a formula was finalized in 1973. Offenses were so anemic back then it's referred to as the "dead ball era." Maybe not the best metric to measure QB success half a century later. like buddy i've taken masters level data science courses, and believe me I've done some shitty fuging work. my masters thesis ended up being about why my method of data collection didn't work well enough for me to defend my thesis. I wrote 100 pages just kinda shrugging and saying "Well ya know covid is so challenging etc."  You're trying to tell people their eyes are lying to them and are posting a very bad graph to do so. Don't be upset when people not only argue with you but point out how bad your graph is.
    • The first 6 games of 2015?  He averaged 40 yards rushing and 210 yards passing for 250 yards per game, at least so says pfr... https://www.pro-football-reference.com/players/N/NewtCa00/gamelog/2015/#63-68-sum:stats
    • I hope he balls out but our memories of the Washington game are still fresh
