Final Panther cuts 8-30-2014

It worries me that DG ever thought King and Mcnutt were any sort of answer. It's nice to see he isn't afraid to admit he's wrong and doesn't drag players along and waste roster space, in hopes to be right. But this was one of the deepest WR drafts an we only left with 1.

Haven't seen him name but with Dockery getting cut I'm thinking Thomas makes it unless we sign someone else.

I wouldn't bank on the notion that he ever thought either one was 'the answer'. They were just guys we tried out for a while.

If he had believed they were 'the answer' he wouldn't have brought in so many other options.

With Boston and Lester going to IR look for us to bring in another safety... Preferably a veteran. We can't rely on Harpers toe and our backups at the position arent going to cut it if one of our starters go down.

Godfrey to saftey and keep thomas.

Did you not watch any of the games? His inexcusable drops, his stats last season with us was some of the worst in his career and not to mention his history with other players. Smitty leaving had to be done for KB to develop and look as good as he has, Cam would have just locked on to Smitty and rarely target KB, you know it and I know it.

I clearly disagree. Its clear Smith is not the Smith he used to be. Drafting a receiver in the 1st round with a lot of talent makes it clear he's going to be number 1. I dont think Smith would care, all the talk over the years point to him preferring that should happen so he could slide over to the slot. Flacco wont be locking onto Smith this year, he's got other people he'll be throwing to so I dont know what makes you think Cam would.

He seems to be managing well as a second fiddle to Torrey Smith in BMore.

It was a personal move on Gettleman's behalf and it was a horrible, yet intentional, mistake. However you want to look at it - Smitty complementing KB, or KB complementing Smitty - it would've been better than what we currently have.

Wouldnt have been a horrible mistake if Gman actually added real talent with KB (Nicks), not Cotchery/Avant.

P.S.

Can you move my 2015 Prospects to the Draft Section?

TY

People need to realize it was him getting cut in the first place for Smitty to get this kind of fire back. Smitty didnt show anywhere near this fire with us last season and played in pre season mode all last season. What makes any of you think this year would have been any different, especially with him and KB clashing

Im not sure who you were watching, but I saw the same guy I see every year in Smith, yet he was battling declining speed and age. How can you call yourself a panther fan when you try to disgrace the best player our franchise has ever had.

Regardless though, if Indianapolis can survive seeing Manning in other colors, I suppose we can do it with Smith as well.

Idk, I am gonna be bitter for a long time. The other difference there is Indy gave Peyton his due. He was shown respect and treated with class by an owner strung out on drugs lol. Gave him a presser, shed some tears, etc. Meanwhile, Gettleman was busy slinging the D around and cut Smitty unceremoniously. It was ugly. That's tough to deal with. Idc what his reasoning was, he made it tough on everyone involved moving forward because of the way he handled it.

The Panthers for some reason has done a terrible job managing our WR. For some reason they believe you can only have 1 leading guy while the rest is 3rd stringers. Imagine if we drafted Keenan last draft and drafted KB with this one and never got rid of Steve. Man

    • Sure it does, maybe not every position and not every draft.  You have to admit the hit rate goes down the further in the draft you get.  Would you more readily find a generational talent at the #2 pick or #19 pick?  High picks are considered "busts" if they doesn't pan out, whereas guys drafted later don't have that level of scrutiny upon them.  Different expectation levels.  If Styles does indeed go #2, I already listed the rarefied air that he would be in.  Maybe he doesn't set the League on fire, but my gut feeling is he does.  Again, you don't take an off-ball LB #2 if he is just a 'really good' player.
    • To illustrate my point, I watched (and commented on the Huddle) that Rozeboom would often wait a full second (or close to it) before taking his first step.  I assume that he probably had issues with false steps, a faulty practice that can take an ILB out of the gap completely.  Watch Luke and you see a step with the snap, and rarely was it a false step.  Rozeboom may have had 100 tackles (speculating) but initial contact was 2-3 yards on the defensive side of the ball.  Luke's 100 tackles were made 1-2 yards from the LOS.  Over the course of a year, Luke was much more productive (more fumbles, fewer long gainers, more OL penalties, fewer first downs, etc) that Rozeboom, but on the stat sheet, they both had 100 tackles.  In fact, Rozeboom's inefficiency kept him on the field more (more first downs, fewer OL penalties, turnovers, and punts) so he should have MORE tackles.   I would like to see stats that break down those things.   For example again, Josh Norman was slow--4.68 or so at CB.  However, his anticipation speed was incredible.  He made as many plays as a 4.4 CB.  I had one coach (college--later became the head coach at WCU) tell me that slower players have to use their brains more to still be around.  Elite athletes can just get by on their physical superiority.  He added, "Rarely does a football player run full speed.  Most of the time, they are not, so the 40 time is misleading stat.  Smart players overcome shortcomings--when the elite athlete becomes average (slows with age, advances in level of competition) they struggle against smarter (football IQ) competition.
    • Obviously tongue in cheek hyperbole. But we do not need a first round RB to compete for a championship. We need intelligent roster building. That to me is the complete opposite of intelligent roster building because it is a prime resource at a devalued plug and play position when we have needs across the defense.
