Gerald McCoy Best DT in NFL?

Turner is going to have his hands full.  As a rookie what better test than to put him up against one of the best in the league. He'll make mistakes but I think he will hold his own.  It helps him tremendouly to have another one of the bests in the league to go up against during practice day in and day out.  Star, KK, and Cole hopefully have prepared him for this task. This will be sort of like taking the final exam the first day of class.  Hopefully he's studied.

Star took care of Pro Bowler Max Unger last year in a big way in his first start.  Turner may or may not "win", it is, afterall, a tall task, but I do not think he gets dominated.  GMan is a  genius for getting this man with a third.

My fear is that, with Trai missing a couple of weeks of preseason, that his conditioning level isn't going to be top notch. Then, who do we rely on? Norwell? :/

just curious, where would you rank Star and KK?

I think Lotulelei is solidly in the top 10 among 4-3 DTs with an argument for being in the top five but not in the top three as of now. No way you can put him over Atkins, McCoy, and Suh as of now.

As for Short, I don't know. I like him a lot but he was still just a rotational player for us last year, which nothing is wrong with that and he is going to be a very good to great interior rusher for a long time, but I just don't know where to put him as of now. Going to need another year to evaluate. Wouldn't be top 10 though when you consider that after the big 3 and Lotulelei, you still have Fairley, Brockers, Mebane, McDonald, Williams, and Dareus. A lot of good 4-3 DTs going around despite there not being as many 4-3 teams in the NFL currently. Casey would be in the top 5 but Tennessee switched to a 3-4 this year.

However, I don't know if there is any 4-3 DT I would want going forward more than Lotulelei. I try to be as unbiased as possible but I think he will clearly be the best run stuffer out of the bunch and if he continues to get better as a pass rusher as shown in the preseason, he is going to be a scary player. This guy was after all talked about as a potential #1 overall pick before his heart scare for a reason. Dude has so much talent.

Yep. McCoy gets all the pub because he's been the shiny turd on a line made of farts for the past few years, and also because Tampa craves another Warren Sapp. I'm not saying he isn't a good player....but he's been the benefactor of a lot of hype.

"Been the shiny turd on a line made of farts". That is awesome!! I'm going to have to use this!! I will not take credit for it.

maybe, but he didnt take the next step until last year, his 4th season.  prior to that, he was hardly in the discussion.  hasnt suh done more in the same amount of time?

Suh,  to me,  is like Peppers..  he is physically gifted  but,  does not live up to that potential as much as he should.   I don't know his pff scores or anything so this may  be an anomaly in his game,  but the few times I've seen Suh,  he was somewhat poor in the run stuffing department.  He is still living off his amazing rookie year.

The Bucs were 15th in league against the rush last year.  We were 2nd.  I'm not saying you're wrong, there's just not much statistical data to back it up.

Wonder what Zod thinks.

I know what you mean.. but us getting reaching #2 status in run defense last season,  had a lot to do with everyone pulling their weight and being on the same page.                 Star is a great anchor,  but if the other guys didn't take advantage of him being a great anchor,  his ability would have been wasted...while he watched the team fall apart around him.

    • Right...I think they've done really well. No one's going to bat 1000% but they've addressed areas of need and there's no comparison to the overall talent of the team now than when DC and then Morgan got the reigns. This whole season is about seeing how much of a step up can Bryce and this team make. If Bryce can't and last year is as good as it gets for him then at least we have a talented roster for the next guy. I think we're going to be good this season
    • I said could, not would. I recognize he has potential based on past performance. Compared to what KP has done, Howell has more potential and the physical traits to make noise. KP has small hands and a weak arm. Not something you want in even your backup QB.  I've been hammering since last off-season before we re-signed Dalton, improve the room. Other than getting younger, I don't see how anyone can say we legitimately improved the room or even tried. We might as well have signed Josh Rosen.  Dalton is still on the roster for now. That's 3 QBs unless we trade or cut him. He's still Bryce's mentor after all. Do you believe we are going to draft someone with potential and give them a legitimate opportunity to develop from the practice squad? Are we going to carry 3 QBs on the active roster? 4 for a developmental rookie? Are we going to potentially cut KP if we draft a rookie and he's outperformed? Doubtful. Cutting Dalton(if we can't trade him) and KP would be 8m in wasted cap space.  I chose Howell as an example because he showed promise in his only full season as a starter. You could plug in another name with the physical traits and potential and what i said would still apply. KP showed almost nothing and was benched. I genuinely don't care if it’s rookie pick as long as there is the potential to develop into a future NFL QB.  As much as I can't stand him, Bellichek was always developing a number 2 QB even with the GOAT as his starter. The wisdom of that was evident when Cassell came in when Brady was hurt week 1 and went 11-5 and almost made the wildcard, which 11-5 gets you almost any other year. I give credit where it's due though. Cassel and Jimmy G both came into the league as developmental QBs, potential QB1s, and went on to have careers.  You never know if you never try. KP feels like a punt in addressing the most important position on the field. Bryce has never played 2 full games of franchise QB level football back to back.  If Bryce progresses, are you ready to offer a 280m 5 year extension based off a one hit wonder year? If Bryce regresses and we need a QB in 27, are we going to trade a fortune away again to trade up to 1 to get one? Are you ready to do the past 3 years all over again?  To me, it's not about Kenny Pickett. It's about the move itself. It was a feeble attempt to improve the QB room. We better hope Bryce succeeds, because if he doesn't, we literally have no backup plan right now.
    • IOL that early isn’t good value at all. We have a LT who might not ever be good again and a RT that might retire soon. T seems deep early in this draft, so I’d go there in the 1st.
