9.

Panthers

+1

1-0

The Panthers set a new franchise first by winning their first season opener after a winning season in franchise history. Despite missing their most dynamic player in Cam Newton, the defense picked up where it left off and forced 3 turnovers to seal the road win. A dangerous Detroit offense awaits them in the home opener.

3. Carolina Panthers

Pro Football Focus rated the Panthers’ defense the second best in Week 1 with a 21.9 rating and gave their pass coverage top honors. Carolina’s cornerbacks yielded just 28 yards after the catch to the Buccaneers.

Fox updated it.

8. Carolina Panthers

"The Panthers proved the offseason doubters wrong by winning in a similar fashion to many of their wins from 2013. They boast one of the most dominant front sevens in the league in any defensive scheme. The additions of Kelvin Benjamin and Jerricho Cotchery will keep the passing game relevant."

I wonder at what point the front seven goes from "one of the best" to "the best".

CBS Sports (Pat Kirwan, not Priscunt)

6. Panthers: Ron Rivera sits Cam Newton (ribs), but still beats the improving Bucs withDerek Anderson at the helm. We saw how good rookie WR Kelvin Benjamin will be for a team in need of wide receivers. Riverboat Ron bet on his team without Newton and won.

I'm not sure if I've ever seen a team that has fluctuated so much in the power rankings.

Yeah agree w/ this. He needs to play efficient and we need to win. If that happens you've got to start talking about us as a potential, legit playoff team.

Quite honestly this is why the Detroit game scares me.  Newton typically starts slow in the preseason.  With diminished reps and injury this year it could take a game or two for Newton to get into full rhythm.     We can't afford to go down early against the Lions like NYG did.  We'll win if we start hot.

OL is going to be tested. Big test for our defense, too. Calvin Johnson looks unstoppable. If I had to put a number on it, I'd probably go with Detroit as a TD favorite

Something else to consider -

People like Prisco, Peter King, Schein, Florio, Darren Gant...they are going to be licking their chops for an opportunity to get some website clicks/publicity by suggesting a QB controversy if Cam plays poorly and we get beat. They've prob already got the article written and are just waiting for a a couple of turnovers from Cam in a losing effort.

I don't think anyone (well, maybe Prisco) will flat out say to start DA but come on...creating a suggestive take on a QB controversy including a QB a lot of people don't like...most def "buzzworthy".

    • I honestly wish Julius Peppers had gotten sick of some of Steve's bullshit and put him on his ass. Because I honestly think that was the one guy Steve wanted no part of.
    • Just worry about it next year.  Its that simple honestly.  its way to early to do what ifs.  I could see us trade/cut chuba and retain dowdle, I could see them let dowdle walk and go with Chuba/Etienne and Brooks, and I could see Dowdle and Chuba both stay and see what happens.  Hell, we still have 6 games left THIS season plus possible post-season...what if Rico or Chuba have an ACL tear or severe injury.  I DO NOT want that to happen, but stuff like that does happen.  Remember RB is the most injury prone position in the NFL due to the beating their bodies take so having some extra guys is never bad, just wish it hadn't come at the cost we paid to get him.
    • I think it’s cool that no one can be really certain what the outcome will be.  That’s a lot of progress! This is a real opportunity for us, I’d be happy with a competitive game and thrilled if we sack up for a W.
